ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Under the supervision of Internews’ Asia-Pacific Program Officer and with guidance from the Regional Programs Manager – Environment, the Pacific Project Officer will support the implementation of Internews’ Pacific Strategy to strengthen and expand Internews’ portfolio in the Pacific. The Pacific Project Officer will be directly responsible for the implementation of two projects in the Pacific region, the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) Asia-Pacific Phase 2 project and the Shrinking the Enabling Environment for Technology-Facilitated Gender Based Violence (TF-GBV) project.

LOGISTICS

This position will be based remotely in Suva, Fiji.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

Pacific-Wide

  • Work to increase the profile of women and marginalized-groups journalists and facilitate their access to communication tools and media outlets.
  • Assist with fundraising and new project development, including concept note development, coordination with partners, and meeting with funders.
  • Facilitate communication and coordination with other Internews teams at the country, regional, and HQ levels.
  • Manage and coordinate requests for information and resource sharing from other departments within Internews and from external partners.
  • Represent Internews to other NGOs, funders, and government officials as requested.

EJN

  • Manage EJN Asia Pacific Phase 2 project activities in the Pacific region, supervising and supporting individual and organizational grantees.
  • Provide supervision and support to EJN’s partner, the Pacific Island News Association (PINA), by managing Pasifika Environews website and other activities as part of its grant from EJN; ensure the timely delivery of all expected outputs and meet expected outcomes.
  • Work closely with PINA to commission stories from Pacific journalists to be published on Pasifika Environews and mainstream media outlets; support the promotion of these stories through social and media and other means; and contribute to Pasifika Environews’ website development and improvements.
  • Expand and strengthen partnership with media outlets, relevant CSOs, journalism schools and other stakeholders to expand EJN’s portfolio and improve environmental reporting in the Pacific. This includes establishing new partnerships with Pacific media outlets to generate quality environmental stories and developing special reporting series on topics underreported in the Pacific, to be distributed on media outlets and Pasifika Environews website. Build synergies and collaborate with like-minded organizations for the development of new projects and activities.
  • Work closely with partners to implement environmental reporting training courses and thematic workshops, facilitate training workshops, and provide inputs to the design of the workshops and training.
  • Identify capacity needs of environmental journalists and their partners in the Pacific and support the development of capacity building activities to address their needs.
  • Produce Pacific project updates and other content for EJN and Internews’ website, and help promote stories through EJN and Pasifika’s social media (Facebook, X and Instagram) accounts.
  • Assist with EJN’s story grant and fellowship programs, including participating in the selection process, distributing funds, working with grantees, monitoring their progress, and reviewing and distributing their final stories.
  • Represent EJN in the Pacific at donor meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Support Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) activities to collect data and document outcomes for the reporting of EJN’s results and learning.

TFGBV

  • Coordinate and support implementation of TFGBV activities including monitoring work plans and activity schedules, scheduling regular check-in meetings, ensuring the timely delivery of all expected outputs and the meeting of expected outcomes.
  • Work closely with partners to coordinate activity implementation, including providing operations and logistics support as needed.
  • Work with Internews and partner staff to prepare and administer small grants and stipends for activities.
  • Support networking and collaboration of women’s organizations across the Pacific.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly donor reporting efforts and M&E activities.
  • Assist with assessments, surveys, events, and other project deliverables as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Required

  • Minimum 5 years programmatic experience in relevant non-profit organizations. Experience ina non-profit media development organization a significant plus.
  • Relevant university degree or equivalent lived/professional experience required.
  • Financial and administrative experience, including experience supporting project deliverables and timelines, meeting deadlines, and preparing and analyzing budgets.
  • Excellent English communication skills: speaking, writing, and listening. Fluency in an additional Pacific regional language a significant plus.
  • Experience living or working in the Pacific region essential.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within the Pacific region.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to set priorities, meet tight deadlines, and manage multiple assignments and time effectively.
  • Grant proposal writing experience and proven text-editing proficiency.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including diplomacy, tact, and the ability to negotiate.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as an effective team member.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple ongoing assignments.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
