The External Relations and Communications (ERCOM) Unit of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is looking for an intern.

The intern will be working under the overall direction of the Chief of Mission and under the direct supervision of the Communication Focal Point and will contribute to the communication and social media outputs in line with the operational activities of the Mission according to the learning objectives described below.

The internship is on a full-time basis for six months. The intern will be working for the IOM Office The Hague, preferably starting by 1 May 2022.

Learning objectives:

  • Assist in drafting and analyzing social media posts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram& LinkedIn);
  • Assist in writing, editing and proofreading texts for different communication channels;
  • Support the ERCOM team with compiling the CO newsletters and annual report;
  • Ability to analyze and summarize policy documents and select relevant news items;
  • Capacity to capture highlights of social media channels;
  • Be disposed to manage logistical and administrative duties such as maintaining files/records, organizing meetings;
  • Support the handling of information requests and inquiries;
  • Support the development of new project activities;
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • A degree in a relevant field, such as communication, international relations, sociology, political science or law;
  • Applicants to IOM internships must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
  • All applicants must be between 20 and 36 years of age;
  • Experience and/or proven interest in migration issues;
  • Fluency in Dutch and excellent spoken and written English is required.;
  • Attention to detail, good communication and interpersonal as well as administrative skills;
  • First working experience, internship or volunteering experience related to communication would be highly desirable.
  • Good knowledge of information and communication tools such as email automation software (Mailchimp), Canva, Office 365 and Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro);
  • Excellent writing and drafting skills;
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;
  • Familiarity with design and/or editing tools is an advantage.

Interns are expected to be covered by their own medical and accident insurance.

The successful intern will also benefit from training components and additional learning elements, including:

  1. Learning about migration issues in the Netherlands and in the region.
  2. Obtain extensive knowledge about external communications related matters through the opportunities to attend to relevant meetings, workshops and events/conferences organized in the Netherlands and take part in the mission’s other activities.

Vaccination against COVID-19 will be required for IOM personnel who are hired or otherwise engaged by IOM on or after 15 November 2021. As part of the mandatory medical entry on duty clearance, candidates will be requested to provide evidence of full vaccination.

Interns are granted a stipend referred to as a Monthly Subsistence Allowance (MSA) as a partial contribution towards accommodation and living expenses. No other remuneration is granted for internships. Interns benefiting from any internship allowance, financial remuneration or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body will not be eligible for MSA.
