Job Description:

Clean the World Foundation, a global health organization focused on WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) programs and emergency relief efforts, is seeking a Director of Development to lead the organization’s fundraising/development efforts globally. Today, the Foundation raises roughly $1 million in development revenue annually, and the goal is to increase that to $5 million annually within the next 5 years. Based in Washington, DC, the position will build and supervise a small team of staff and interns, to help guide the worldwide efforts to meet the long-term business development goals. In addition, the Director of Development will also represent Clean the World Foundation at speaking engagements on the request of the Executive Director. Reporting directly to and working closely with the Executive Director, this position will be a key management role within the Foundation and will assist in leading the organization to fulfill its global mission.

Essential Functions:

  1. Lead the creation and execution of a multi-year, comprehensive, and sustainable business development plan, in consultation with program and other units as relevant, designed to help achieve the targeted increases in fundraising revenue.
  2. Manage/supervise all fundraising/development activities globally, including grant writing, corporate partnerships/sponsorships, individual giving programs, and fundraising events.
  3. Build and manage a portfolio of donors and prospects, and personally cultivate, solicit, and close large financial gifts from foundation, corporate, and individual donors.
  4. Track new business opportunities with bilateral, multilateral donors and the UN System.
  5. Work with the Executive Director to identify and pursue major donors and prospects, and engage them as appropriate in the donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship processes.
  6. Assist in launching and managing a new donor database and fundraising platform (likely Blackbaud/Raiser’s Edge), to include elements around prospect identification, wealth screening, and contact management.
  7. Promote the Foundation through speaking engagements, media interviews, and at community events to raise awareness of and support for the organization’s work.
  8. Represent the Foundation and the Development Department at senior leadership meetings as assigned by the Executive Director
  9. Work closely with Clean the World, Ventures on ideas for joint fund raising.
  10. Participate in Foundation team meetings and various committee meetings, as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  1. Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Management, Public Administration, or another relevant field.
  2. At least 10 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, including strategy development, team management, and a proven track record of managing a portfolio of donors/prospects and closing large gifts.
  3. Understanding of and experience in the global health sector required; experience in the WASH field strongly preferred.
  4. Experience with Blackbaud products, especially Raiser’s Edge and similar components, strongly desired.
  5. Must possess a valid driver’s license and passport.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Must have strong and polished interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  2. Creative, strategic, and analytical thinker with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing tasks to meet goals and deadlines.
  3. Must be highly organized and able to work well with others.
  4. Must be knowledgeable in Microsoft Office and Windows based computer application and database management.
  5. Must be knowledgeable in fundraising trends and best practices, including tools and techniques relevant to the global/public health sector.
  6. Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  7. Must have a thorough understanding of international nonprofits and global health as well.
  8. Must have a thorough understanding of USG funding, besides other bilateral and multilateral aid donors, including the UN System and World Bank, ADB etc.
  9. Must have a thorough understanding of PPP, Blended Financing, CSR funding, the private sector.
  10. Must understand how to develop Theories of Change, Logic Models, Logical Frameworks and Capture Processes.
  11. Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% of the time, both nationally and internationally.

Environmental and Physical Conditions:

  1. Office and travel environments. Must be capable of lifting to 50lbs.
