Overview of role

Crisis Action is looking for candidates to be our next Development Officer. You will play a key role in furthering the development team’s implementation of our fundraising strategy, with a particular focus on maintaining and developing systems, donor relations and strategies. Crisis Action receives funding from a spectrum of foundation, government, and individual donors as well as from core NGO partners. We are looking for someone who shares our passion for Crisis Action’s work and can help us communicate the impact of our work to existing and prospective donors as well as maintain and solicit a discreet portfolio of donors. You will be expected to be self-motivated and have good attention to detail. You will work alongside an excellent international team, under the direct guidance of the Director of Development, the Strategic Philanthropy Advisor, and the Senior Development Manager and work in close coordination with the Finance Team, the CEO and the campaign teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the implementation and positive delivery of Crisis Action’s fundraising strategy.
  • Manage day-to-day relations with a select portfolio of government and foundation donors and cultivate those donors for future solicitations.
  • Work closely with the development team, CEO and other Directors to support relationships with current donors.
  • In conjunction with relevant colleagues, represent the organization vis-à-vis foreign ministry officials and other donor representatives for select donors.
  • Work with other development staff to draft funding proposals, donor budgets/ reports, donor updates, letters of receipt and other related outreach material as needed for a variety of foundation, government and individual donors, in close cooperation with the finance and campaign teams.
  • Provide donor related briefings, talking points and background information to relevant colleagues ahead of donor meetings and events.
  • Contribute to the organization’s efforts to strengthen and improve monitoring and evaluation and ensure the organization’s adherence to its contractual commitments.
  • Support strong donor engagement through successful management of occasional donor events, as needed depending on geography.
  • Manage and further develop the relevant administrative infrastructure on SharePoint, Salesforce, Outlook, etc., including grant tracking and reporting systems, events calendars, and updating contact lists, donor profiles, website, and annual report donor acknowledgment lists and meeting minutes, etc.
  • Coordinate distribution of donor outreach materials (e.g. annual reports/ donor updates, event invites).
  • Act as the development team’s point person to liaise with Crisis Action’s global team.
  • Support in inducting new staff/consultants as appropriate.
  • Support the Director of Development with organizing meetings and calls across time zones, taking minutes and managing related travel arrangements and logistics, drafting and editing other documents (e.g. fundraising updates for the Board), and preparing emails, expense reimbursement forms, and other financial or administrative documents.

Team communications

  • Take the lead on creating agendas for weekly Development Team calls.
  • Maintain calendar and take notes at all Development meetings.

Person specification

The following are essential:

  • Experience working with Salesforce or any other CRM in a Development/ Fundraising Office
  • Excellent writing, editing and all-round communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to tell a story in a compelling way – distilling the most impactful points in a pithy manner
  • 2-3 years experience in the NGO Development/Fundraising sector.
  • Experience in drafting proposals, reports and materials demonstrating impact.
  • Ability to work with colleagues dispersed across international offices and from diverse backgrounds.
  • Enthusiasm, initiative and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, including a systematic approach to maintaining donor tracking systems.
  • Experience in maintaining IT systems and excellent computer and Microsoft Office proficiency is vital, ideally with experience using wider tools (e.g. Office365 and Salesforce)
  • Keen attention to detail and quality control on all documents produced.
  • Ability to travel as needed

  • Must have the right to work in Belgium, France, or the UK.

The following are desirable:

  • Experience working for an international organisation and/or international fundraising
  • Experience producing a range of communications materials for different audiences.
  • Financial literacy and a proven ability to understand budgets.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) experience
  • Knowledge and passion for conflict and human rights issues
  • Positive attitude and a good sense of humour.

Terms and conditions

Salary: 35,000 EUR / 35,000 GBP per annum

Benefits: Excellent benefits package including generous leave policies – 25 days holiday increasing to 30 days after 3 years, plus a monthly well-being day for all staff; three months paid sabbatical after 5 years; pension with employer contribution and flexible working.
