Position Title: Development Director

Reports To: President & CEO

Status: Full Time, Exempt

 

Position Summary: The Development Director serves as a leader of a community-based fundraising team at Feeding America Riverside | San Bernardino (FARSB). This person will be responsible for building and crafting a successful fundraising strategy to accomplish the goals outlined in the 2021-2024 strategic plan. They will also oversee the implementation of a year-round fundraising strategy that complements national campaigns and the local market. This leader will generate short-term growth results as well as sustainable long-term growth. This strategy should include ways to deepen and diversify the fundraising base, increase unrestricted & restricted funds from all constituencies, and include communications/marketing and a face-to-face/in-person strategy.

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate effective leadership in all aspects of fundraising, including foundation and corporate fundraising, major gift solicitation, grants, direct mail, special events, cause marketing campaigns, and the volunteer program. In addition, this position will lead the effort to increase FARSB’s brand and hunger awareness throughout the service area by ensuring appropriate mediums are being utilized.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Create new strategies to enhance relationships with business & community leaders.
  • Build, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward corporate, foundation, and high-net-worth donors.
  • Maintain an ongoing pipeline of potential sponsors and donors.
  • Serve as primary relationship manager for all prospects & work with the team and board of directors to effectively solicit gifts.
  • Develop an effective cultivation strategy for a portfolio of major donor prospects.
  • Craft a development plan for 2022 and beyond- complete with fiscal and non-fiscal goals and deadlines for measurable deliverables.
  • Develop innovative solutions to generating revenue in cryptocurrency, stock, and legacy gifts.
  • Oversees fundraising activities, including direct mail, special events, cause marketing campaigns, peer-to-peer fundraisers, monthly giving, and volunteer initiatives.
  • Oversee and execute grant planning, writing, research, and proposal management.
  • Assist in hiring, training, supervising, and mentoring development staff.
  • Implement & follow through on fundraising events to ensure they are strategically positioned to improve donor relationships effectively and efficiently.
  • Work with the CEO and Board of Directors to establish a presence in the community to increase the organization’s visibility as a funding source for potential and current/past donors.
  • Direct the public relations/communications function to develop marketing strategies to promote the organization’s mission.
  • Oversees the donor database and champions the continued population and expanded use of the donor database functionality to support the organization’s needs better.
  • Contribute to and oversee the fundraising & development budget, ensuring resources are allocated accurately, efficiently, & effectively to provide adequate support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Professional Attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field; CFRE preferred.
  • Five or more years of demonstrated fundraising success.
  • One or more years of experience leading teams of three or more direct reports.
  • Experience overseeing $3M or more in revenue through grants, direct mail, cause marketing, corporate and foundation fundraising, and special events.
  • Superb interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, and the ability to develop tailored and compelling solicitations and proposals.
  • Ability to draw connections, align values, and identify opportunities and gaps.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Proven effectiveness in leading the public relations/communications function.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office as well as experience with donor database systems.
  • Ability to work with people of widely varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle confidential information and relationships with sensitivity and discretion.
  • Willingness and ability to travel through geographic service area and work evenings and weekends as needed with a good driving record and valid California driver’s license.

Qualifications:

Must be reliable, have a dependable vehicle, and possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and insurance. Bachelor’s Degree or proven work in a related field; must have excellent verbal, written and organizational, and public speaking skills. Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds. Professional demeanor and work attitude at all times. Ability to work well as part of a team, pay attention to detail and instructions. Perform general duties: but not limited to copying, faxing, mailing, phones, filing, and emails. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
