Job Description Summary

Under direction of the Head Service Worker, positions in this classification are responsible for supervising Building Service Workers in their assigned areas as well as establishing work priorities and allocating work. Ensures the correct use of related custodial materials, supplies, and equipment as well as ensures all staff adhere to departmental and university security, safety and administrative policies. The Assistant Head Service worker is assigned to a designated area and may be required to fill in the Head Service worker s role based on operational needs.

Organizational Status

Works alongside Heads, Supervisors, and Managers to ensure tasks are performed efficiently and to the customer s expectations.

Work Performed

Assists in conducting daily staff briefings at shift beginning to discuss priorities and assign job duties; as well as at shift end to ascertain matters and issues

Coordinates the work and supervises the performance of Building Service Workers for the purpose of providing efficient and effective custodial service to faculty, staff, students and visitors at UBC Point Grey Campus. When necessary, works with staff to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Assists with scheduling and allocating crews, ensures daily operations run smoothly and resolves any staffing issues that arise on shift by re-prioritizing schedules and providing direction to subordinates in order to provide appropriate coverage for absent workers as required, including performing custodial duties themselves if needed.

Ensures safety measures are adhered to by conducting regularly scheduled safety observations, providing feedback and follow up to staff as well as re-training as needed.

Locks and unlocks buildings, ensures all buildings in their assigned areas are secure.

Operates specialized equipment, carpet care and carries out specialized tasks is desirable.

Completes daily written report to Assistant Supervisor detailing all operational issues that arise during the shift and flagging for follow up.

Conducts area inspections to evaluate cleanliness levels and ensure all work is performed in accordance with the standards set out in schedules/assignments, including the proper use and care of custodial equipment and supplies.

Oversees any major projects related to floor care maintenance, construction clean and service requests.

Responds to trouble calls. May be required to transport Building Service Workers and equipment to and from job sites using assigned vehicle.

Supports the Head with processing staff leaves and vacations and maintains correct documentation and records for staff attendance, absences and reasons for those absences, as well as ensuring medical or dental appointments are approved by Assistant Supervisor based on established guidelines.

Ensures a high level of customer service is delivered at all times to UBC Faculty, Students and Staff by all Building Service Workers on their team.

Issues, maintains and accounts for all equipment allocated to them and arranges for replacement and repair.

Assists in conducting training and arranges for provision of on-the-job training to new workers as well as refresher training for experienced workers.

Responsible for security in assigning and receiving key sets used by staff, including building masters and campus grand masters.

Carries out other related duties assigned in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the position and classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Makes decisions regarding the coordination and allocation of service worker staff; inappropriate decisions may impact the service provided and may create a negative perception of the University.

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision and from oral and written instructions. Refers policy and procedural problems to their immediate supervisor.

Supervision Given

Organizes, allocates and supervises the work of assigned crew of Building Service Workers. May be required to provide close guidance to new Building Service Workers.

Preferred Qualifications

High School graduation.2 years relevant experienceand Ability to supervise staff or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Class 5 driver s license.
