Translators without Borders

Contract length: to end December 2022, with the possibility of extension Hours: Full-time Location: Home-based, available for normal working hours in the CET/EET time zone

Travel: None anticipated

Reporting to: Data Solutions Manager

Salary range: 3,200-3,800 USD/month

The role

The Data Analyst works within the Research, Advocacy and Data team, supporting a range of projects to source, analyze, and visualize data on language and communication in order to change minds and practices in the aid sector. Until the end of 2022, projects will include data support to humanitarian action in Somalia and Nigeria.

This is a key role for the organization, for which we anticipate securing longer-term funding, and we would encourage candidates interested in the possibility of a more permanent role to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the further development and management of CLEAR Global’s language data analysis and mapping system, including preparing data and designing and maintaining data pipelines and models
  • Provide rapid analysis, insights, and visualization on language and communication needs from various datasets as required
  • Develop and maintain robust and efficient data management policies and processes for the data we use
  • Support and input on the development and analysis of surveys, feedback forms, and other program-level data collection tools
  • Engage with humanitarian partners on integrating and tracking the use of standardized language indicators in data collection efforts
  • Work with the Data Solutions Manager and humanitarian partners to track and analyze the impact of CLEAR Global’s data products
  • Undertake risk review processes to identify potential risks associated with collecting and sharing language data, and develop appropriate mitigation strategies
  • Contribute to CLEAR Global’s overall approach to data analysis and data-driven decision making, and use data and data visualization to advocate for language to be considered across humanitarian responses and development programs
  • Contribute to a positive, innovative and supportive work environment where CLEAR Global’s values are understood and upheld
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

The Data Analyst should be an innovative self-starter with a strong sense of initiative, an understanding of the humanitarian sector with a strong background in data science, statistics or a related field and enthusiastic about the importance of increasing access to knowledge through language. The right candidate is an energetic team player and leader who agrees with CLEAR Global’s basic beliefs and values and who can work virtually with team members based throughout the world.

Requirements

Required skills and experience

  • Degree in data science, statistics, or related field
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Strong skills in Python and/or R
  • Advanced skills with Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience using APIs to extract and query data and consolidating data from multiple sources
  • Strong skills running SQL or other data query languages to process relational data
  • Data visualization experience, including experience with platforms such as Microsoft PowerBI, Tableau, or similar
  • Experience working with demographic and MEAL data
  • Communication skills, particularly the ability to communicate complex concepts to a non-specialist audience
  • Experience designing data visualization and data management products to inform decision-making
  • Experience managing potentially sensitive demographic data and developing strategies to identify and mitigate protection risks with data

Preferred skills and experience

  • Working competency in other languages
  • Experience with GIS and web mapping, for instance using Carto, MapBox, QGIS, or ArcGIS Online
  • Graphic design skills in data visualization
  • Experience working with interactive data visualization software and libraries such as Datawrapper, Flourish, Plotly and D3
  • Experience working with big data and/or web crawling of multilingual content
  • Experience working with machine learning training data, especially language data
  • Humanitarian or international development experience
