JOB PURPOSE

As Amnesty International’s expert on the rights of older people and/or people with disabilities in situations of crisis, the researcher will lead the development of this body of work. Specifically, the researcher will formulate and implement research plans to ensure maximum impact, undertake cutting-edge human rights investigations, produce timely research outputs, communicate findings, analysis, and wider strategy to internal and external stakeholders, and liaise with colleagues across the International Secretariat and wider Amnesty International movement.

The researcher will contribute to strengthening Amnesty International’s reputation as a leading voice on the rights of older people and/or people with disabilities, including through in-depth research and advocacy on pressing issues, and will collaborate closely with partner organizations.

ABOUT YOU

You are a human rights researcher with experience undertaking investigations in situations of armed conflict or major crisis, as well as specific experience documenting and reporting on violations and abuses against older people and/or people with disabilities. You have considerable knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian law and of international fora, including at the UN, related to the rights of older people and/or of people with disabilities. Your work shows a demonstrated commitment to intersectionality, with experience undertaking work on ageing, gender, and disability. You have the ability to express ideas in a clear and concise way and significant experience drafting text in a variety of styles, including research reports and media materials. You will be able to draw from and add to the skills of a multi-disciplinary team, working with different research methodologies and with a commitment to innovation and creativity in outputs and campaigning, all to maxi mize impact in relation to specific issues affecting the rights of older people and/or people with disabilities. You will relish collaboration with colleagues across Amnesty International and among partner organizations working on related issues.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To lead on the development and implementation of research strategies designed to deliver impact in relation to agreed priorities on the impact of human rights crises on older people and/or people with disabilities;
  • To monitor, research, investigate, and analyze human rights-related developments in order to provide timely, accurate, independent, and impartial assessments and expert advice on the impact of human rights crises on older people and/or people with disabilities, with an intersectional focus;
  • To organize, take part in, and lead field research and other missions, leading specifically on information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis, and assessment of human rights concerns in situations of armed conflict or other major crises;

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience investigating human rights violations against older people and/or people with disabilities, including in the context of armed conflict or other major human rights crises;
  • Experience that includes a strong intersectional focus in research, including on gender, is preferred;
  • Proven experience of writing human rights research materials tailored for various audiences;
  • Knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian law, including related to the rights of older people and/or people with disabilities;
  • Knowledge of the UN system related to rights of older people and/or people with disabilities, and experience with relevant advocacy is preferred;
