Danish Red Cross (DRC) is looking for a Country Manager to lead and develop our partnerships, portfolio and scale-up in Ethiopia in order to ensure that vulnerable communities are protected and less affected by disasters.

Ethiopia is prone to a number of urgent and complex humanitarian challenges which include both man-made and natural disasters. Ongoing conflicts, desert locust invasion, recurrent climatic shocks and the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19 are key drivers of humanitarian needs. Amidst a political transition, armed conflict and community violence remain a critical concern across Ethiopia and has forced millions into displacement.

Migration and displacement are major challenges and Ethiopia is both a country of departure, return, and transit for migrants. The country is also experiencing alarmingly high numbers of internally displaced people due to conflict and is hosting large numbers of refugees from neighbouring countries.

DRC’s main partner in Ethiopia is Ethiopia Red Cross Society (ERCS). To address humanitarian challenges, DRC’s engagement in Ethiopia is focusing on supporting communities to be less affected by disasters and to ensure that migrants and displaced people to be protected.

The Country Manager is overall responsible for ensuring that the DRC supported country programme and partnerships are implemented in line with the DRC international strategy and Country Strategy, Red Cross Standard Operational Procedures, and donor requirements and guidelines.

Responsibilities

The Country Manager will be responsible for:

  • The strategic direction of DRC engagement in Ethiopia in alignment with DRC and ERCS strategic priorities
  • Leading and implementing the scale up of the DRC country engagement in Ethiopia, including develop and operationalise the fundraising strategy
  • Leading DRCs commitment to strengthened Movement collaboration in Ethiopia
  • The operationalising and implementing organisational priorities in Ethiopia
  • The overall management and development of DRC supported portfolio and budget in Ethiopia
  • Representing DRC and develop Partnerships with RCRC Movement Partners other in-country partners and stakeholder
  • Lead and manage the DRC team of delegates in Ethiopia, including security

Essential experience and qualifications:

  • Academic background, e.g. master’s degree in international development studies or any other relevant field
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in working with humanitarian organisations in developing, emergency and post-emergency contexts
  • Documented experience with team leading and staff management and security management
  • Successful experiences with resource mobilisation with private foundations and institutional donors, including EU/ECHO, DANIDA and others
  • Expertise within programme cycle and financial management of programmes supported by major donors
  • Experience from the RCRC Movement
  • Working experience from Africa
  • Exceptional resilience, stress management and ability to work in demanding situations under pressure
  • Excellent communication, coordination, networking and facilitation skills
  • English and Danish language skills

Employment Conditions

The starting date is 1 June 2022. The contract period is 2 years with the possibility of extension.

The duty station is Addis Ababa. The position is a family position. Regular travel to the programme areas is required.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the DRC Terms and Conditions for Delegates on Long Term Missions. The salary including all allowances and pension will be between DKK 48,500 to 52,000 per month, depending on qualifications and experience. Housing and insurance are covered by DRC.
