Overview

AARP Services, Inc.(ASI), founded in 1999, is a wholly-owned taxable subsidiary of AARP. AARP Services manages the provider relationships for and performs quality control oversight of the wide range of products and services that carry the AARP name and are made available by independent providers as benefits to AARP’s millions of members. The provider offers currently span health products, financial products, travel and leisure products, and life event services. Specific products include Medicare supplemental insurance; credit cards, auto and home, mobile home and motorcycle insurance, life insurance and annuities; member discounts on rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and lodging; special offers on technology and gifts; pharmacy services and legal services. AARP Services also engages in new product development activities for AARP and provides certain consulting services to outside companies.

As the Corporate Attorney working in the Office of General Counsel for AARP Services Inc., you will assist senior attorneys in transactional matters, including due diligence, drafting, structuring, negotiation, and execution of appropriate agreements. In addition, the Corporate Attorney collaborates with staff and senior attorneys to identify opportunities to streamline processes and develop new procedures that support the business unit/department.

Responsibilities

  • Provides legal support to Associate General Counsels on new product development and other innovation initiatives to ensure compliance with AARP and ASI standards.
  • Supports the Associate General Counsels with the legal responsibility for drafting, negotiating, analyzing, and maintaining contracts for third-party provided benefits, products and services for AARP Members.
  • Serves as a legal representative for the New Product Development team, as well as the Health, Financial and Lifestyle lines of business.
  • Support Associate General Counsels with the legal review of vendor agreements, which range from simple to complex.
  • Anticipates and researches legal issues to help mitigate risk to the enterprise.
  • Conducts legal due diligence on potential providers.
  • Handles other legal initiatives as they arise.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Juris Doctorate degree.
  • 0 – 2 years of experience.
  • Prefer experience in contract negotiation, corporate law, consumer protection, advertising, and privacy.
  • Must be, or able to become, a member of good standing in the District of Columbia bar within one year of hire date.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to think on one’s feet and clearly express arguments and ideas to staff and provide engaging, clear training for staff who may have minimal legal background.
  • Ability to function independently with limited guidance.
  • Ability to handle multiple, complex projects on an ongoing basis, with strong attention to detail.
  • Must be customer-oriented, a team player, approachable, responsive, and engaging.
  • In-office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
