Medical Teams International

The Copywriter/Editor contributes to the calling of Medical Teams International by writing and editing effective copy that raises funds and awareness for Medical Teams across a variety of channels including: online, social, video, and print. This role contributes to developing and integrating brand messaging, storytelling, and refining the overall Medical Teams brand tone and voice.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Copywriting:

  • Craft clear and engaging copy that grows audience affinity toward organization, delights donors, and compels people to deepen engagement.
  • Ensure writing is outcome-driven i.e., direct response writing generates responses and giving, brand writing increases brand perception, etc.
  • Write copy for a wide range of channels, including blog posts, website, direct response appeals, brand collateral, and social media, incorporating an understanding of key audiences and messages for each.
  • Discover and shape great stories, transform detailed, complex information into compelling content that can engage a broad audience.

Editing:

  • Execute fact-checking and proofreading of copy to ensure our communications meet or exceed Medical Teams high bar for writing quality. Bring a solid attention to detail, and thorough knowledge of grammar and style and brand guidelines.
  • Maintain proficient knowledge of Medical Teams history and programs.

Brand Influence and Representation:

  • Act as a Medical Teams brand ambassador, writing and interpreting the brand in various and appropriate voices and ensuring all communications are on brand.
  • Ensure copy highlights the dignity and resilience of the people we serve.
  • Contribute to ideation, conception, and development of marketing campaigns.
  • Contribute to evolving and refining brand tone and voice across all marketing content.
  • Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies.

Other Duties:

  • Attend and collect stories of impact and images at U.S.-based clinics.
  • Utilize volunteers when appropriate.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, LICENSES, & CERTIFICATIONS

Required:

  • BA/S in English, creative writing, marketing, or advertising, or equivalent experience in a related field

EXPERIENCE

Preferred:

  • 2+ years experience writing fundraising copy

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge:

  • Commitment to Medical Teams International Calling Statement and Values.
  • Knowledge of direct response, website, social, and blog platforms
  • Knowledge of AP Style

Skills:

  • Superior storytelling and written communications skills, with a high degree of emotional intelligence
  • Creative problem solver who can navigate complexity and technical language to get to the heart of an issue and tell accessible human stories.
  • Exceptional attention to detail to ensure accuracy in all communications deliverables.
  • Highly organized with strong time-management skills.
  • Moderately skilled with Office 365 suite: Microsoft Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Teams etc.
  • Moderately skilled with content management systems, digital asset management systems, and social media platforms.

Abilities:

  • Ability to write with a style and voice that is consistent with the brand, while fine-tuning copy to meet a desired audience.
  • Ability to produce purpose-driven copy that is effective at delivering results.
  • Ability to write copy quickly, be flexible in fast-paced work environment, and juggle multiple projects.
  • Able to convey sense of intensity and urgency around global health issues.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner to donors, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to independently plan, organize, and follow through on tasks.
  • Familiarity with best practices in fundraising writing principles.
