Plan International

TERMs OF REFERENCE

I. Context

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organization that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. We work alongside children, young people, our supporters and partners to tackle the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children. We support children’s rights from birth until adulthood and enable children and young people to prepare for and respond to crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national, regional and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge. For over 80 years, we have been building meaningful partnerships for children, and we are active in over 75 countries.

Plan International has been committed to improving the lives of children in Asia-Pacific since 1948. We work in 15 countries, helping thousands of very poor communities to fight child poverty and help children realise their full potential. We advance children’s rights and equality for girls in Asia-Pacific by working with children, families, communities, partners, government agencies, other NGOs and the private sector. Through strong partnerships, we support children, especially girls, to learn, lead, decide and thrive.

II. Background

Stories, including impact stories, cases stories, photos and videos are essential for all kinds of communications activities, especially for development and humanitarian organisations like Plan International. Storytelling has proved to be an established and effective method to raise the voices of in-need children and their communities, connect people socially and emotionally, share values, encourage reflection, and influence behaviours. At Plan International, from country offices to the Asia-Pacific regional hub, there has always been a thirst for stories, photos and videos that constitute a powerful tool to unlock the potential of girls.

Notwithstanding, communications and campaigning colleagues of the regional hub and 15 country offices in the region differ greatly in storytelling capacity due to diverse backgrounds and varied understandings of Plan International Communications Protocols, relevant Safeguarding Guidelines and policies, etc. as many among them have only joined the organisation in recent past. It is our intent to enhance relevant capacity for colleagues across the region in developing compelling stories, and to create a chance for our colleagues to share their experience during the training sessions for mutual improvement.

Besides, it’s also a huge advantage for Plan International’s volunteers, programme participants, local community members, youth and children etc. who are first-hand witnesses of events, especially unexpected ones that Plan will later provide emergency responses, to have basic knowledge of story-telling, photography and video-making, which support them to speak for themselves and share from their personal experience in a sincere, authentic way. Therefore, it is expected that after the training sessions APAC communications colleagues can confidently and effectively transfer obtained knowledge and skills to the above mentioned groups via similar training patterns.

This TOR is to seek for consultant service to provide Training of Trainers (TOT) sessions on multimedia storytelling for APAC communications and campaign network members.
