Overview of position:

  • Our client has commenced a stabilization in 3 regions of Burkina Faso. These are Sahel, Nord & Est. The program involves supporting the govt. in its efforts to enable people return to their homes & rebuild their lives after months of conflict. The main focus of the interventions are rehabilitating of basic services such as health, water & education. Alongside this our client will implement a large scale cash for work program in the targeted areas. The civil works will involve the use of local contractors. During the stabilization program there will be constant engagement with local communities in terms of getting a deeper understanding of the causes of conflict, the challenges the community & agreeing interventions including cash for work activities, supporting small scale business & enhancing the capacity of women to address their specific concerns.

Role objectives:

  • The overall objective is to support our clients stabilization project in specific areas of Burkina Faso in specific for developing community activities which contribute to helping communities restart their lives after the experience of the conflict.
  • The Community Engagement Officer will visit local communities in the program areas, hold meetings with representatives of these communities & develop specific responses to immediate needs faced by the people as they try to rebuild their lives after the impact of the conflict.
  • The Community Engagement Officer will meet with relevant authorities on the technical level & align their needs within the implementation phase.
  • The Community Engagement Officer will be responsible for assisting with community programs including cash for work, establishing safe spaces for women & working with experts on community security.
  • The Community Engagement Officer will prepare reports on activities at community level ensuring that program implementation is monitored on a regular basis.
  • The Community Engagement Officer will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of community development projects as part of our clients stabilization program in Burkina Faso.
  • S / He will work under the direction of the Head of Stabilization of someone appointed by him / her in ensuring the smooth running of livelihoods’ interventions including supporting cash for work, unconditional cash grants, assistance to provision of household items including building materials, solar panels, mobile phones & supporting community resilience.
  • S / He will visit the program areas in Burkina Faso which have been impacted by the conflict & carry out consultations with the community, with a particular emphasis on supporting women in program activities.
  • S / He will monitor program activities, prepare reports on activities & ensure that all interventions are in line with the objectives of our clients stabilization priorities in Burkina Faso.
  • The Community Engagement Officer will liaise with local govt. structures to ensure they are fully aware of our clients interventions in their areas.

Project reporting:

  • This role reports to the Head of Stabilization & Senior Civil Engineer.

Key competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, Economics, Community Development.
  • 2 years in community development work with govt. of NGO.
  • Knowledge of local languages in program area.
  • Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media & others).
  • Demonstrated interest & / or experience/ community development
  • Flexible & open to learning & new experiences.
  • Respect for diversity & adaptability to other cultures, environments & living conditions.
  • Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media & others).
  • Good interpersonal, networking & communication skills.
  • Willingness to contribute & work as part of a team.
  • Fluency in spoken & written French is required.
  • Working knowledge of English is an advantage.

Team management:

  • This role has no team management responsibility.
