Lighthouse Relief

CONTEXT

Lighthouse Relief provides dignified humanitarian relief to forcibly displaced people in Greece. Since our early days of conducting search and rescue operations off the Aegean island of Lesvos, our services have evolved to meet the shifting needs and circumstances of refugees and asylum seekers. Today our activities revolve around two pillars:

  1. Psychosocial support for children, teens, and young adults living in refugee camps.
  2. Emergency assistance for people experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, or other otherwise living under precarious situations in Athens.

Our approach is participatory, meaning that we listen to people from the communities we support and encourage them to be equal partners in our endeavours. The principles of dignity, respect, and accountability guide everything we do.

Lighthouse Relief is a nonprofit humanitarian organisation registered in Sweden and in Greece with no political or religious affiliation.

POSITION SUMMARY

Communications, fundraising, and advocacy are vital to the success of Lighthouse Relief’s aim to relieve the worst effects of forced migration on people experiencing displacement in Greece. The communications and partnerships team strategizes ways to effectively reach target audiences with trustworthy, relatable, and compelling messaging that motivates them to act in support of refugees and asylum seekers.

As our next Communications and Partnerships Intern, your primary responsibilities will be to support all aspects of communications, fundraising, and advocacy under the supervision of the Head of Communications and Partnerships and the Communications and Fundraising Officer. You will liaise with the psychosocial support and emergency response teams and spend time “in the field” to gather first-hand accounts and photos for effective storytelling.

To succeed in the role, you will need confidence, tact, and a nuanced understanding of migration issues. Moreover, you will need to excel at staying organised amidst a frenetic environment and adapt easily to rapidly shifting circumstances and priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in producing content (written, visual, and video) for social media, the newsletter, the blog, the website, and other communications channels.
  • Support the development of online fundraising campaigns and the monthly giving programme.
  • Contribute research and draft content for grant proposals and donor reports.
  • Contribute to the internal monthly report on team activities and their impact.
  • Assist in planning and implementing an advocacy strategy and related campaigns currently under development with a group of NGO partners.
  • Update the website and other platforms as instructed (Squarespace).
  • Help plan and execute events (i.e. fundraisers, community or partner events, press conferences etc.).
  • Engage our supporters, including former staff, volunteers, and others who serve as “ambassadors” for the organisation.

The responsibilities listed here are not exhaustive, and the position holder may be required to undertake additional duties broadly in line with the above areas of responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS

ESSENTIAL

  • Stellar writing and editing skills (in English).
  • Strong photography and videography skills.
  • A knack for multimedia storytelling, especially through social media.
  • Great at multitasking and paying attention to detail while not losing sight of strategic priorities or the overall mission of Lighthouse Relief.
  • Flexibility, patience, and composure to deal with unexpected developments.
  • Eagerness to learn on the job, knowing when to ask for help, and admitting mistakes before they snowball into something more serious.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, multicultural environment.
  • Hold a valid European Union residence permit.

DESIRED

  • Field experience in the humanitarian sector (preferably in refugee settings).
  • Knowledge of Greek and European policy issues related to migration and asylum.
  • Talent for graphic design and creating infographics / compelling visuals
  • Experience managing and moderating Facebook groups.
  • Familiarity with Canva, MailChimp, Squarespace, Asana, and GlobalGiving.
  • Ability to communicate in Greek, Arabic, Kurdish, Farsi, Dari, or French.

TERMS

Fixed-term volunteer contract with 40 hours (full-time) or 20 hours (part-time) per week work schedule. Reimbursement of accommodation expenses of up to €200 per month for full-time interns.
