I. Background on ACTED

Created in 1993, ACTED is an international non-governmental organization pursuing a dual mandate of emergency response and development interventions in 40 of some of the world’s most vulnerable countries affected by conflicts, disasters, or socio-economic hardship. ACTED is looking for a fresh graduate who is confident, self-motivated, and a committed team player to obtain a first-hand impression of the day-to-day working environment, learn, develop new skills, and gain experience to fill the Communications Intern position based in Mogadishu.

II. Position Profile

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Communications and Advocacy Officer, the Communications Intern will support the Project Development team with various communication processes essential to day-to-day operations, including the production of photos, videos and success stories for external use. The intern will further support the team in the operationalization of the communication plan for Somalia.

III. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Project Development (PD) and program teams across Somalia to deliver content for communications channels including the website, social media channels, etc;
  • Plan and schedule content for the social media accounts.
  • Develop communication materials such as infographics, posters, factsheets etc. outlining ACTED’s capacity and programming for external engagements.
  • Maintain a database with a continuous selection of photos of operations, sorting, processing, and sharing.
  • Take lead on office administration duties such as raising orders forms and developing BoQs whenever needed.
  • Provide support to PD team in meeting donor contract requirements for communication related deliverables.
  • Support program teams for project and donor visibility whenever required.
  • Compile and prepare beneficiary success stories, photo story, project zoom and transversal pieces in support to raising the profile of ACTED’S programming in Somalia.
  • Design and editorial development of internal communication media (newsletter, etc.).
  • Prepare presentations and other communication materials for internal engagements with program and project development teams.
  • Undertake field trips to gather communication material for external use.

IV. Qualifications and Technical Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Arts, Public and /or International Relations or related discipline from a reputable international or a recognized Somali institution.
  • At least one years’ experience in humanitarian related communications, knowledge management, and external relations, with proven track record of managing media platforms, article development, community management and social insight reporting.
  • Strong understanding of the humanitarian and development context in Somalia.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Ability to analyze large sets of data and reports and synthesize complex issues.
  • Fluent English (written and spoken), with excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Prior work experience with an INGO in an emergency setting preferred.
  • Photography skills is an added advantage.
  • Professional demeanour and ability to handle sensitive situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a high-pace environment and is good at teamwork.
  • Good organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Can work with minimum supervision and achieve results within set deadlines.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications like Microsoft Office, Excel, power point.
  • Ability to travel to ACTED’s areas of operation, as required.
