POSITION: COMMUNICATIONS AND SEASONAL PROJECTS OFFICER

DEPARTMENT: COMMUNICATIONS

REPORTS TO: SENIOR PROGRAM MANAGER

LOCATION: COUNTRY OFFICE-MOGADISHU

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Support campaigns and communications activities that will raise awareness, improve understanding, forge partnerships and generate support for the strategic plan (SP) and MERCY-USA brand in general
  2. Communicate through coalitions and partnerships, including with Government, UNCG, and NGOs including on special days.
  3. Produce and update briefing materials on the situation in Somalia and MERCY-USA responses under the supervision of the director of communications
  4. Undertake field missions to gather stories – particularly on the safe water project and the other ongoing projects and work undertaken by the CO.
  5. Produce multi-media content for social media, web, internal/external, and archives, including features, photos, videos.

  6. Under the directive of HQ communications, Produce publications and update programme fact sheets.

  7. Undertake activities and produce material to enhance Mercy-USA and donors (institutional partners, private donors and local media) visibility and provide other support for resource mobilization. media.

  8. Monitor and analyze mentions of MERCY-USA in the press and relevant political and social trends.

  9. With the approval of HQ Communications, He/She will write press releases for local media and establish and maintain working relationships with local journalists and media outlets to increase visibility of Mercy-USA’s work in E Africa.

  10. Keep abreast with the latest local and national-international happenings, politics, funding, and humanitarian issues

  11. Manage uptake and adherence to develop visibility materials for the field response

  12. Implement training and other capacity-building activities for Mercy-USA CO-based and field-based staff.

  13. Support the implementation of C4D initiatives, including communication with beneficiaries and behavior-change activities.

  14. Work with program and field colleagues to introduce communications approaches for behavior change in our key activities.

  15. Work with partners and field staff to roll out new communications channels to MERCY-USA’s beneficiaries.

  16. He/She will organize and maintain a catalog of field narratives, project information and photography.

  17. Perform Other duties as required.

JOB SPECIFICATION

Academic

  • Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or other related degree

Experience

  • 2-3 years in similar position preferably in an INGO

Work related skills

  • News and feature writing, photography and video production and production of innovative audio-visual packages
  • Has gained experience in utilizing specialist communications techniques to enhance functional outputs
  • Outstanding Organizational and time management skills
  • Has provided direction and instructions to more junior staff members within are of expertise
