Mission

Geneva Call is a neutral and impartial non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting respect for international humanitarian norms in armed conflict and other situations of violence. Geneva Call is currently focusing its efforts on banning the use of anti-personnel mines, protecting children from the effects of armed conflict, prohibiting sexual violence in armed conflict and the protection of the medical mission.

Overall activities

As part of the MEAL and Program development and Innovation unit, the ‘Children and Education in Emergencies’ Officer in Brussels supports the implementation of Geneva Call’s humanitarian engagement for the protection of children and education in emergencies in armed conflict through the respect of humanitarian norms by armed non-State actors, a project funded by Luxembourg. The overall activities are research and policy development, and the development of contextualised and innovative engagement tools, thematic support to field operations all in relation to the protection of children and education in armed conflict. In this position, a close collaboration with the head of global engagement and the regional leaders is essential.

Main qualification

Education and experience

  • Master or postgraduate degree in international relations, development studies or another relevant subject, close to child protection.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a similar role and with increasing level of responsibilities, with a focus on the protection of children and education in emergencies in armed conflict.

Technical skills

  • IT skills (MS office, excel etc.).
  • Data collection and analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience in writing research, policy and advocacy papers of publishable standard.
  • Solid understanding of international humanitarian law and human rights law with a focus on children and education would be an asset.

Languages

  • Fluent in English.
  • Fluent in French.

Personal skills

  • Understanding and respect for humanitarian principles and the organizational vision, mission and confidentiality.
  • Strong analytical skills and capacity to develop and implement advocacy strategies, including through networking.
  • Experience in organizing and managing expert meetings, workshops and advocacy events with a view to produce concrete outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiatives.
