Job Description

This newly formed Society is seeking Volunteer Board Members with experience working in the on-profit or housing development sectors and oversee delivery of programs and research and identify opportunities for Society-led development. The successful Board members should be a driven and passionate advocate for affordable housing with the knowledge and experience to deliver programs and services, develop new affordable housing, and work with external partners and funders. The vision of the Society is to provide housing solutions across the entire housing continuum that support both low-to-moderate income households and address housing needs within the District. The Society will work with the District, non-profit housing agencies and the community to sustain a diverse range and supply of affordable housing options in a fiscally responsible manner. Squamish is a rapidly growing community with changing housing needs. Recognizing that stable, secure, and accessible housing is foundational to healthy individuals, families, and communities, the Society works to increase affordable housing options and reduce homelessness in Squamish through:

Roles And Responsibilities

The Society’s Board of Directors will be responsible for the ongoing vision, operation, and stewardship of the Society. This includes enabling and overseeing staff, determining strategic priorities, monitoring society effectiveness, and ensuring the Society remains accountable to members, stakeholders, and funders.

Act In Accordance With The Society Bylaws, Including

The Board of Directors can rely on staff support for day-to-day operations, but should be prepared to engage with the organization in the following ways:

  • Acting honestly and in good faith with a view to the best interests of the Society
  • Exercising the care, diligence and skill that a reasonably prudent individual would exercise in comparable circumstances
  • Acting in accordance with the BC Societies Act and the regulations thereunder
  • Acting in accordance with these Society Bylaws
  • Fully understand and support the Society’s mission and purpose, and to review it periodically for accuracy and validity.
  • Sets out the Society’s goals, means, and primary population groups served
  • Hire and support the Executive Director, and review hiring of additional staff
  • Actively participate with the staff in the strategic planning process and assist in implementing strategic goals, and help staff to develop business plans, objectives, and priorities
  • Ensure the appropriate and efficient use of Society resources by assisting with the development of the annual budget and ensuring that proper financial controls are in place
  • Should be prepared, when asked, to publicly represent the Squamish Community Housing Society and be able to clearly articulate the Society’s mission, accomplishments, and goals to the public
  • With support from staff, be responsible for ensuring compliance with the BC Societies Act.
  • The Board must establish pertinent policies and procedures and adhere to provisions of the Society’s bylaws and articles of incorporation
  • Should be prepared to recruit and orient new board members and assess board performance.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Post-Secondary degree preferred but not a requirement
  • Significant experience in relationship building and community development. Knowledge & Career Experience Preferences Professional career experience within real estate development, real estate sales, residential builders/contractors, housing operators/property management, support services, housing, financial/mortgage, or legal sector Skills
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to think conceptually, analyze and solve complex issues, exercise sound judgment, and to make effective decisions and recommendations.
  • Effective negotiation, conflict resolution, problem solving and consensus building skills.
  • Effective leadership, supervisory, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to instill and demonstrate teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability to motivate self and others and encourage innovation.
  • Ability to delegate effectively. Personal Attributes

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities.
  • Knowledge of property management and residential tenancies.
