Organizational Context

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is a ministry of the Society of Jesus, incorporated as an international non-governmental organisation with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. The organisation was founded in November 1980 and now has a presence in over 50 countries. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support and guidance of an international office (IO) in Rome. JRS service is human and spiritual, working in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term well-being of refugees and displaced people while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs.

The main services provided are in the field of education, emergency assistance, psychosocial support and livelihood activities. Currently, more than 724,000 individuals are direct beneficiaries of JRS projects.

Operational Context/Role

The Facilitator will focus on the delivery of quality and competent Facials, make-up and nails, theory and practical. The incumbent will act as leader of the allocated class where provision of sound and contemporary knowledge is required. While providing necessary support teaching 4 days a week, he/she works closely and actively with the

JRS Livelihoods team, JRS Gauteng team at large, beneficiaries and partners collaborating with JRS in this area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching students’ basic Theory & Practical on Facials, Make-up and Nails
  • Training students on salon reception
  • Facilitate classes as per required hours per credit (each unit standard has credits that gives the hours needed to finish the classes)
  • Preparing lessons, Unit standard Manuals and examinations
  • Follow-ups with salons on the progress of students during placements
  • Assisting with buying of products and managing the stock in classes
  • Assisting in raising funds that is to assist with the salons at the centers.
  • Working closely with Job Placement Officer and M & E department to follow up on internships or placements at salons.
  • Supervising the preparation of portfolio of evidence files
  • Assisting each learner with portfolio of evidence
  • Preparation and timely submission of lesson plans
  • Ensure a well-kept daily attendance Registers for students
  • Submit monthly reports (general / SETA report)
  • Attend monthly staff meetings (departmental + country)
  • Any other duties assigned by the Livelihoods Coordinator

  • Timely production of reports highlighting recommendations and actions taken
  • Proven acceptable standards of facilitation according to SETA standards.

Supervision and Accountability

The Beauty Facilitator will be directly accountable to the JRS Livelihoods Coordinator. Once a quarter (once a month to begin with) there will be a meeting with the supervisor to assess progress and make adjustments if necessary.

The places of work will be:

  • In the Johannesburg and Pretoria offices of JRS

Qualification and Experience

  • Education Training Certificate: Facials, Make-Up and Nails, or any relevant qualification (Artisanship qualification is a requirement)
  • Tertiary education in economics, business administration and/or social sciences will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience
  • Registration with Services SETA as a Facilitator (this is a must) and/or Assessor and Moderator
  • Demonstrated ability to upload and control learners’ Portfolio of Evidence.
  • Excellent communications in English (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated experience in starting, developing and sustaining a small business.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to manage budgets with project management an advantage.
  • Demonstrated performance in problem solving, analytical and critical thinking.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and coordinate across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated strong identification with values, vision and mission of Jesuit Refugee Service
  • Required Skills and competencies.
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and produce quality reports on time with attention to detail.
  • Proficient in using computers with related knowledge of software programs and Internet.
