POSITION TITLE: Assistant Manager of Operations and Maintenance, Central Park Zoo

REPORTS TO: Manager of Operations and Maintenance

DIRECT REPORTS: Maintenance Shop Supervisors. Attendants’ Supervisors

POSITION OBJECTIVE: To assist the Central Park Zoo O&M manager in maintaining facilities and grounds, oversee projects performed in-house and by outside contractors, and manage department’ staff.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Oversee Central Park Zoo property, general maintenance, repair, and upkeep, including buildings, grounds, systems, and equipment.
  • Manage O&M staff, including assignment of projects/ tasks including painting, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and groundskeeping.
  • Coordinate and provide oversight for work performed by outside contractors.
  • Collaborate with Central Park Zoo staff to ensure preventive maintenance, work orders, and other requests are completed on time.
  • Perform all administrative and managerial duties associated with the maintenance operations at Central Park Zoo including, but not limited to budget management, staff management and development, purchasing, safety, and adherence to all WCS established policies and procedures.
  • Assist manager in preparing and maintaining the O&M department operating budget.
  • Assist manager in hiring, training, and providing leadership for all full‐time and seasonal O&M staff.
  • Assist manager in maintaining, approving, and submitting timesheets for O&M staff.
  • Assist manager in purchasing, initiate Purchase Requisitions and approve vendor payments for O&M purchases when the manager is unavailable.
  • Coordinate O&M activities with other departments to facilitate efficient repair/improvement tasks with minimal interference/interruption to guest experience or animal access to exhibit habitats.

Minimum Requirements

Qualification Requirements

Minimum of five years of hands-on experience in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC. Valid NY, NJ, or CT Drivers License required.

Required Qualifications

  • Computer knowledge, including basic word processing, spreadsheets, and the ability to master job-specific software.
  • Supervisory and managerial experience running a maintenance crew
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with employees, colleagues, City and other government agencies, outside contractors, and the general public.

Physical Requirements

The position requires work outdoor in all weather conditions and office environments as well. Tasks require manual agility and the ability to use hand and power tools safely (e.g., drills, saws) and operate equipment (e.g., tractor, snow removal machines, jack hummer, table saw). Some tasks require climbing ladders, kneeling, bending, and moderate lifting up to 50 pounds.
