Africa Campaigner

Introduction

The world’s largest fossil fuel producers are already on track to produce more than twice the amount of coal, oil and gas than can ever be burned if we are to hit our climate targets. The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative champions a new international mechanism to complement the Paris Agreement, one that would hold governments accountable for their fossil fuel production plans in an effort to advance a global just transition to an equitable renewable-powered future.

The Position

Reporting to the Head of Africa Campaigns & Advocacy, a new Africa Campaigner will help further scale the campaign for a Fossil Fuel Treaty across Africa. If you are looking for an exciting role helping scale a huge, ambitious campaign with significant network organising, project management and communications, while working with a global team and network of people scaling demands for a fossil fuel free future – this position is for you.

The Africa Campaigner will join the fast-growing International Support Team for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. They will work closely with the Campaigns and Communications teams to ensure that African-led calls for a just transition continue to scale — with the ultimate goal of a number of nation-states across Africa formally spearheading the proposed Fossil Fuel Treaty.

Our growing team is looking for a skilled campaigner and network organiser who can help build a powerful network of organisations, movements, subnational governments and individuals across Africa to support the Treaty demand and inject further momentum into our global strategy. This will involve coordination with our growing network of civil society organisations, youth activists, faith institutions, cities, high-profile individuals and other allies.

This position is full-time, exempt, and salaried. Salary is calculated based on location and experience and the range is 40-55,000 USD.

Key Responsibilities

• In collaboration with the Head of Africa Campaigns & Advocacy and our broader team, help scale the campaign for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty in Africa
• Support advocacy to policymakers and nation-states across Africa including diplomatic engagement with governments and preparation of materials, briefings, and talking points
• Coordinate project and event logistics around major moments in Africa, as well as providing support for African partners attending key global events
• Foster and deepen engagement with African movements and civil society organisations from a broad range of constituencies – including Indigenous communities, youth movements, artists, faith institutions and the health sector – expanding and activating the network of groups and voices calling for nations globally to support a Fossil Fuel Treaty
• Secure high-profile city and subnational endorsements across Africa to build further momentum behind the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal
• Expand and activate our group of African Champions and high-profile individuals who are backing the Treaty campaign to scale communications and campaign engagement
• Support public communications in Africa demonstrating growing support for the Fossil Fuel Treaty through collaboration with the Communications Team particularly on social media, content production and traditional media strategy
• Support grant applications and fundraising to increase capacity for the Treaty Initiative in Africa to inject further capacity into partner organisations and campaign activities

Experience and attributes:

Required:

• A deep passion for climate justice and supporting a fair phase out of coal, oil and gas and an equitable transition to a renewable powered-future
• 2+ years of experience in campaigning or network organising
• Strong project management skills and experience including in events
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, strong initiative, and motivation
• Commitment to contributing to an anti-racist, decolonial, inclusive organisational culture
• Ability to work irregular hours and with a remote and virtual team to participate in a global initiative
• Fluency in English is required.

Desired:

• Fluency in French, Arabic, Swahili, Portuguese or other major African languages is highly desired
• Experience in engaging and activating a network of organisations and individuals to join a campaign and advocate for a specific policy demand
• Strong relationships and experience working with grassroots movements and climate activists across Africa
• Experience in campaign communications including copywriting, digital advocacy, social media or content production
• Experience in direct diplomatic engagement with policymakers in national governments or subnational governments in Africa or globally
• An understanding of the African policy landscape, particularly in energy, extraction and climate policy areas
