Summary

The Advisor for Global Development Policy, Climate will provide leadership and strategic thinking on shaping and advancing Save the Children’s policy and advocacy for addressing climate change within U.S. foreign policy. The impacts of the climate crisis are not felt equally, with people in developing countries often bearing the worst impacts. Climate change has led to increased occurrences of drought, flooding and extreme weather events around the world which in turn have had devastating impacts on food insecurity, public health, public safety and poverty, often times with women and children being the hardest hit. In close coordination with other senior staff, you will develop and coordinate a policy and advocacy strategy to strengthen U.S. international development and humanitarian policies to address the global climate crisis, and develop and implement policy and advocacy strategies, including engaging with the U.S. Congress and the administration on global climate change.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

Lead Global Climate Change Portfolio (30%)

  • develop and implement a policy and advocacy strategy for engaging and informing U.S. global policies to address the climate crisis and informing U.S. government engagement in global forums, such as the G7 summit and COP.
  • monitoring and analyze U.S. government announcements and policy documents on the global climate crisis.

Engaging U.S. Government (30%)**

  • develop and implement a strategy for engaging the federal government, including Congress, the White House, and federal agencies, and identifying ways to foster bipartisan support for Save the Children’s priorities within the global climate policy agenda.

Internal Coordination of global climate crisis policy and advocacy (25%)

  • represent Save the Children U.S. on Save the Children global working group on climate and coordinate input from other colleagues within SCUS into reports, policy and advocacy strategies and workplans, and policy documents.
  • support climate change policy advocacy elements of Save the Children’s global campaign.

External Representation (15%)

  • represent Save the Children US in external working groups, coalitions and other relevant groups on climate change, developing strong partnerships with key stakeholders, and positioning Save the Children as a member and increasing its thought leadership within the climate advocacy community

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor Degree or equivalent experience, plus at least five (5) years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated established networks within the global climate change advocacy community that advocates to the U.S. government.
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing policy and legislative strategies to influence U.S. Congress and/or the Administration on foreign policy issues
  • Knowledge and understanding of the global climate movement, the key stakeholders, and experience in global climate policy analysis
  • Demonstrated skills in policy research, policy analysis and policy development
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in climate change or environmental policy development and/or advocacy
  • Experience working in large, complex, matrixed organization
