About SJAC

Founded in 2012, The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting meaningful justice for Syria that holds perpetrators accountable and addresses the grievances of victims, leading to lasting peace and respect for human rights.

Position Summary

Through a capacity-building project, SJAC supports four Syrian human rights organizations focused on documentation and advocacy. SJAC provides financial support as well as capacity building across a wide range of skills. Under the supervision of the SJAC Legal Director, the advocacy consultant will provide support to two victim-led human rights organization in the development of advocacy strategies and campaigns.

General duties and responsibilities

  • ·Work with victims’ groups to create goals and strategies for international advocacy efforts.
  • Implement each organization’s strategy and seek opportunities for advocacy on the international stage, and work to connect victims’ group members with policymakers and journalists
  • ·Provide training and coaching to victims’ groups on social media engagement and campaigning
  • ·Assist victims’ groups in prioritizing their messaging and recommendations for policymakers and the public
  • ·Execute at least one advocacy campaign with each victims’ group on a human rights topic, developed in coordination with each organization
  • Provide regular updates to SJAC on the progress of campaigns and advocacy training

skills and experience

  • Relevant postgraduate university degree or equivalent with relevant work experience
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • A minimum of five years’ experience advocating for human rights on the international stage, including working with policymakers and international organizations
  • Professional fluency in written and spoken Arabic
  • Experience working directly with and advocating for victims of human rights violations
  • Knowledge and understanding as well as experience of working in the Syria/Middle Eastern context is essential
  • Sensitivities to the needs and dynamics of families and survivors.
  • Experience in projects, programs or research related to the human rights and justice sector (desirable)
