Director of Donor Engagement and Planned Giving

The Director of Donor Engagement and Planned Giving is responsible for overseeing a $4 million+ major gifts individual giving program as well as planned giving. Responsibilities include setting strategic direction and overseeing execution of all stewardship and solicitations for $5,000+ annual supporters, supervising a team of four, and serving as a front-line fund raiser with a personal portfolio of high-capacity supporters.

The Director of Engagement and Planned Giving:

  • Approaches major gifts through a donor-centric perspective in order to achieve a high level of donor satisfaction and engagement.
  • Develops strategic direction for the major gifts department, including financial projections.
  • Creates strategic direction for institutionalizing and growing the planned giving program.
  • Analyzes past years’ major gift results and makes recommendations for strategies to improve return rates across donor levels.
  • Supports the Vice President of Development in preparing for current and future capital funding needs.
  • Manages a portfolio of up to 80 qualified individual major donors (cumulative annual giving of $5,000+) by identifying, qualifying, cultivating, engaging, soliciting and stewarding those donors.
  • Sets individual fundraising goals for each major donor as well as annual and multi-year financial targets for the major donor revenue stream.
  • Develops personalized stewardship and solicitation strategies for all qualified major donors.
  • Develops special opportunities (e.g. programmatic and capital) to secure additional gifts above and beyond donors’ annual giving levels.
  • Assesses opportunities for transformational gifts and forms individual plans to connect donors’ passions and interests with the work of CFBNJ.
  • Engages donors through multiple communication methods including phone calls, emails, hand-written notes, letters, informational materials, and face-to-face meetings.
  • Oversees smaller (e.g. 20-30 people) donor stewardship and cultivation events at the FoodBank, a Board Member’s home, or other location (e.g. Kings Cooking Studio).
  • Engages the major donor community at signature FoodBank events and activities.
  • Works with the organization’s Board of Directors, President and CEO, senior leadership team and other personnel.
  • Oversees implementation of planned giving program and coordinates the Planned Giving Committee that includes Board and non-Board members.
  • Oversees coordination of the Real Estate Advisory Council and associated real estate activities in conjunction with Board and senior staff.
  • Supervises four direct reports — Donor Engagement Officer (2) and Development Associate (2) — who are part of the donor engagement team.
  • Drafts job descriptions, sets priorities for each role, and hires and trains new staff.
  • Monitors staff performance including mid-year conversations and annual performance reviews.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum ten years of effective fundraising experience, with demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively, think strategically, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Computer fluency in MS Office, Salesforce (strongly preferred), web applications, and knowledgeable about the role of technology and electronic communication in fundraising.
  • Understanding of the record-keeping and stewardship systems that support a successful donor relations program.
  • Excellent communications (written and verbal) and presentation skills.
  • Ability and willingness to participate in events outside the workday schedule.
  • Must possess personal vehicle and valid driver’s license and be willing to travel as necessary.
  • Knowledge of New Jersey philanthropy a plus.

Education

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree a plus.
