Job Overview/Summary: The Youth Education Coordinator (YEC) coordinates educational programming for newcomer youth, including planning, implementation, and reporting for the IRC’s Leaders in Training, Youth Tutoring and Newcomer Youth Summer Academy. The YEC collaborates closely with the Youth Program Coordinator (YPC) to ensure all programs integrate best practices for teaching and tutoring English Language Learners and students with interrupted education, as well as social-emotional learning principles, and to ensure that IRC NY’s Youth Education goals and objectives are accomplished using a holistic, collaborative approach, in partnership with school staff, caregivers, and newcomer youth themselves.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the IRC Youth Tutoring and IRC Leaders in Training programs

· Manage 40+ volunteers and interns to support program administration and implementation for youth tutoring

· Proctor online tutoring Wednesday-Saturday with 12-15 tutors daily

· Lead online community events each Saturday morning

· Facilitate a two-hour workshop on college access, career readiness, and civic engagement each Saturday for Juniors and Seniors in high school in accordance with curriculum provided

· Plan and facilitate career days/visit for Leaders in Training students

· Plan and facilitate an LIT alumni panel

· Plan and facilitate a workshop related to civic engagement

· Manage participant recruitment, retention, attendance, and family engagement

· Manage program files and databases (enrollment, attendance, outcomes monitoring); maintain accurate and complete records

· Collaborate with E&L Manager to implement M&E tools and ensure program monitoring & evaluation activities are carried out in May, report on program progress and achievements

  1. Co-lead the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA), with direct responsibility for the academic program

· Play a lead role in NYSA planning, including staff and volunteer recruitment, hiring, and training

· Supervise program Academic Lead Teachers, Classroom Culture Lead Teachers, SEL Teacher, Gym Teacher, Substitute Teacher, and Assistant

· Oversee teachers to coordinate, plan and develop a 6 week culturally responsive and age-appropriate curriculum, lesson plans and assessment tools using student centered teaching methodologies for English Language Learners

· Ensure effective implementation of IRC’s Multi-tiered System of Support

· Design progress report and report card templates and coordinate related systems of data collection and dissemination

· Plan and coordinate caregiver and teacher conferences

· Conduct teacher observations and coaching using the IRC Framework for Effective Teaching

· Co-lead and plan weekly community events and student award ceremonies in collaboration with other Deans

  1. Maintain program information and data collection systems in compliance with IRC standards and contractual obligations, contribute to strengthening program monitoring

· Prepare internal and external reports for programs supervised

· Ensure program data is consistently collected and entered in relevant databases

· Other related duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

· Master’s degree in education or related field required

· A minimum of 2 years’ professional experience working with children and youth, specifically in the context of educational and social programs, required. Teaching certification and experience in the NYC public school system desirable.

· Experience as Head of Teaching, Instructional Coach, or School Leader, highly desirable

· Responsive Classrooms and/or Restorative Justice trained, highly desirable

· Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations, highly desirable

· Proven success planning and delivering creative and engaging curricula for beginner to intermediate ELLs

· Cultural competency training experience, desirable

· Demonstrated ability to promote an organizational culture that reflects IRC’s core values of service, accountability, integrity, and equality. Ability to lead in a way that recognizes that IRC’s work is best accomplished through the true collaboration of individuals from many cultures with a great variety of skills and perspectives

· Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

· Fluent in MS Office applications, especially MS Excel

· Organized, responsible, and flexible: able to maintain responsibility for multiple tasks in the context of a diverse, fast-paced work environment and maintain composure under pressure

· Fluency in a second language highly desired (such as: Spanish, Dari, Pashto, Arabic, French, Haitian-Creole)

Working Environment:

  • A combination of standard office environment, with the potential for remote work on a limited basis.
  • Occasional weekend and/or evening work required.
  • Staff are required to adhere to IRC’s COVID risk mitigation policies, which may include masking, physical distancing, enhanced hygiene practices, symptom screening, and isolation and quarantine when needed. IRC policies may be stricter than federal, state, or local level policies.

Compensation and Benefits: This is a full-time, regular position classified as exempt and ineligible for overtime under state and federal law. We offer a comprehensive and highly competitive set of benefits. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $30.00 per hour. Please note the published pay rate is specific to candidates based in the New York Metropolitan area.
