Position Summary:

Creative’s award-winning Communications & Marketing Department seeks a writer/editor who can produce outstanding content, marketing materials and contribute to our global positioning efforts. This person is critical to the Department’s on-going success and requires a team player with a multitude of skills, including quality writing, excellent editing, and ability to distill complex activities into clear messages.

The writer/editor has multiple roles in this fast-paced Department. First, the person would be responsible for producing a regular flow of high-quality, compelling content – articles, brochures and more – about our program implementation. This requires active collaboration across the organization, cultivating internal sources, understanding the nuances of our implementation, and building a list of future topics. Second, the writer/editor is expected to support field communications officers through coaching, mentoring and editorial support. Third, the writer/editor will work with Program Divisions to develop thoughtful blogs by our experts, guiding them through the editorial process and ensuring that their content meets the high expectations of our audiences. Finally, within Business Development arena, the writer/editor will produce content in support of specialized marketing campaigns that position this mission-driven company.

Reporting & Supervision:

This position is based in the HQ Communications Department and reports to the Senior Director of Communications in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Creative has a hybrid work schedule (three days in the office and two days remote).

Responsibilities

Consistent with the Department’s content marketing strategy and company goals, the writer/editor is expected to:

  • Develop and manage the editorial calendar based on content from the Department, field offices, Division experts and others.
  • Write news and feature stories for Think Creative magazine, the website and other platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in the Program Divisions to develop content ideas
  • Deliver quality content – online news and features, magazine pieces and similar content – using a journalistic style that reflects the scope and results of Creative’s work.
  • Ensure deadlines are met and, when needed, adjust the timeline for delivery.
  • Collaborate across the organization to ensure others have the materials they require.
  • Manage external consultants and perform certain administrative tasks related to the Department.
  • Able to write from one to four pieces a week, depending on length and demands from field programs
  • Devise content distribution plans that leverage in-house and external platforms, such as social media, graphics and email newsletters, with other team members.
  • Review, edit and (at times) rewrite success stories produced by field communications staff.
  • Guide the program staff to develop blog topics, edit submissions and post them to the website.
  • Support the planning and provide editorial support to panel sessions.
  • Update marketing materials, online program descriptions, staff bios and related materials.
  • Work on multimedia packages, including preproduction (planning, logistics, consultants, etc.), field production and post-production (script writing, video editor, approvals, etc.).

Qualifications

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, International Relations or a related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years of professional experience in journalism, communications, or public relations with a significant portfolio of published material.
  • Background in international development or international affairs, preferably in a communications role
  • Proven writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to identify content ideas, find interesting angles and tell stories in a compelling, accurate, authentic and respectful way.
  • Understand how to effectively interview people.
  • Ability to build relationships and establish rapport with colleagues, both in person and virtually.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to larger team projects.
  • Eager to work with a diverse group of colleagues from many countries and backgrounds.
  • Availability to travel to international field locations in support of communications efforts.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communications skills.

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with technical or government reports and how to extract stories from them
  • Knowledge of AP Style.
  • Experience planning, coordinating and carrying out video productions, including script writing, interaction with contract videographers and video editors is very helpful.
  • Basic video editing, videography and photography skills are a plus.
  • Experience in Abode Creative Suite, including Premiere and Photoshop.
  • Familiarity with WordPress website management system.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language, particularly Spanish, French or Arabic, is helpful.

The Salary Range for this position is expected to be: $ 61,300 – $ 75,000.

An employee’s pay position will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, rele-vant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, performance, travel requirements, and business or organizational needs.
