About Living Goods:

Living Goods is a leading community health nonprofit based in Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Uganda with a small global support team based in Washington, D.C. We work alongside governments to equip community health workers with the training, tools, and support they need to provide lifesaving healthcare. We seek to treat some of the deadliest but most easily preventable childhood diseases, reach women with pregnancy support and family planning, and ensure that every child is fully vaccinated.

Living Goods’ work has been validated by best-in-class researchers and endorsed by top industry leaders. A 2014 randomized controlled trial in Uganda showed that Living Goods-supported community health workers reduced under-5 child mortality by 27%. Over the past five years, we have won a Skoll Award, received landmark growth funding from the prestigious TED Audacious Project, and most recently became the 2021 third-place winner of the Trinity Challenge. GiveWell and The Life You Can Save have respectively named Living Goods a standout and recommended charity, and we possess top ratings from Charity Navigator, Candid/Guidestar, and Impact Matters.

The Opportunity:

Living Goods is hiring a donor writer to support our Business Development team. As we enter the second year of our 2022-2026 strategic plan, we must raise an ambitious amount of funding to meet our organizational goals. Doing so requires developing a large volume of high-quality written materials for our donor audiences.

We are seeking an individual with excellent writing, editing, and critical thinking skills. To succeed in this role, you must be a clear, concise writer who can communicate complicated ideas in a simple way. Prior experience with donor writing is not required, but a journalism or technical writing background is preferred. Other important prerequisites include the ability to read carefully, synthesize large amounts of information, analyze complex subjects, and reason logically to form an objective assessment.

A typical day in this role could entail tasks such as writing an intensive update on our operations for a 7-figure funder, drafting an exciting appeal for a prospective donor to win new funding, inputting into an organizational thought leadership piece, or providing editing or design support.

This role is primarily remote with occasional in-person meetings at Living Goods’ Washington, D.C. office. This role reports to and works primarily with the Donor Communications Manager but is part of a larger 15-person global fundraising team.

This is an exciting opportunity to write meaningful content for an organization that is extending access to lifesaving healthcare services to millions of people. You will get to team up with and learn from healthcare, data, and digital experts across countries; receive in-depth exposure to our field programs; and work on products for some of the biggest stakeholders in our sector. While this role will primarily support the Business Development team, you will have opportunities to work on additional communications and strategic materials that align with your areas of interest and desired growth.

Responsibilities:

  • Write high-quality funder reports, concept notes, and proposals. Living Goods works hard to provide funding partners with compelling, accurate, and transparent updates on our impact. We tailor our language to each audience; some require sophisticated and detailed products, while others prefer punchy and visual materials.
  • Manage our database of the frequently used language. This is a critical tool for the fundraising team and requires the ability to synthesize large amounts of text, identify outdated or ineffective language, and wordsmith. Similarly, you will be responsible for maintaining our citation database with up-to-date research and statistics.
  • Edit, copyedit, and proofread content in accordance with AP Style.
  • Occasionally provide design support, such as for presentations in PowerPoint or InDesign files.

Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of writing experience preferred, with a university degree in English, Journalism, Communications, International Development, or a healthcare-related field.
  • Superb writing skills and a passion for words. You are a clear, concise writer who can distill complex ideas into easily understood language. You can make even the most seemingly technical concepts compelling and understandable.
  • Meticulous copyediting and proofreading skills. You edit for clarity and concision and in accordance with AP Style and Strunk & White’s Elements of Style.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking abilities. You’re not daunted by complicated subjects and can unravel them into clear, simple language. You like piecing things together logically on the page.
  • Attention to detail. You instinctively notice mistakes and inconsistencies.
  • Genuine interest in healthcare. You can be truly passionate about supporting frontline health workers to deliver lifesaving healthcare services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. You have good humor, a humble approach to service and the cultural sensitivities to work effectively across international teams.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow.
  • Design experience is a plus.
  • Bilingual with French as a desirable language.

The salary range for this role is expected to be $50,000-$55,000 if U.S.-based with actual salary commensurate with experience, plus an annual bonus equaling up to 13% of base salary depending on performance. Generous benefits include employee and dependent health, vision, and dental insurance. Living Goods contributes 90% of the premium for employees and their dependents; Life and AD&D benefits, a 401(k) defined contribution retirement plan; flexible work schedules; professional development allowance and other growth opportunities; and Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Employees have a generous leave benefit inclusive of 25 days of vacation per year. Living Goods also offers sick leave, holidays, and bridge days. If based in East Africa, compensation will be based on specific country pay and benefits structure.
