Here at Human Appeal we have an exciting opportunity for a Volunteers Officer to join our team based in Cheadle, Greater Manchester (although the role will initially be home-based during Covid-19 restrictions).You will join us on a full-time basis as part of an initial 1-year fixed term contract with a view to progressing into a permanent role. In return, you will receive a competitive salary of £18-24k per annum.

Human Appeal is a faith-based charity that aims to abolish poverty by providing humanitarian aid, sustainable development programs and championing advocacy for our beneficiaries worldwide.

As Volunteers Officer, the successful candidate will play an integral role in contributing towards the development, planning, and delivery of the charity’s volunteering programme.

Human Appeal is currently in the midst of a very exciting process of significantly expanding its global reach, including establishing a new fundraising arm in the US. The successful Volunteers Officer will be based in Manchester and will either be responsible for the continued recruitment and oversight of volunteers across the North of England, or they will take on a new and exciting opportunity to establish Human Appeal’s volunteering practices, and grow a team of volunteers, in the US. We are looking to appoint somebody immediately to this role.

Key Duties And Responsibilities Of The Volunteers Officer

  • Acting as a central point of contact and support in their given geographic region for all volunteer queries and support requests, including providing prompt and thorough responses and resolving any complaints
  • Acting as a central point of contact and support in their given geographic region for all volunteering requests from internal departments, specifically the Fundraising and UK Programmes departments
  • Managing and supervising volunteers and Interns across their given geographic region, including developing their skillsets, providing volunteer engagement initiatives, and promoting a positive working environment
  • Actively growing Human Appeal’s volunteer database in their given geographic region, including promoting volunteering opportunities, processing new volunteer sign-up requests from the Volunteers inbox, and conducting Volunteer Team Leader interviews
  • Recruiting Interns across their given geographic region for various departments to achieve additional manpower support, by preparing Role Profiles, posting job adverts and conducting interviews
  • Preparing volunteers resources, such as collection buckets, t-shirts, merchandise and donation forms, for all volunteering activities
  • Designing and delivering local volunteering projects and outreach programmes to achieve increased public interaction with Human Appeal and improve local relations
  • Exploring new and innovative ideas to maximise the potential of Human Appeal’s volunteering programme
  • Undertaking a range of administrative tasks in support of the wider Volunteers Management team and People and Culture department

NB: If the successful Volunteers Officer’s given geographic region is the US, then the post-holder will also be responsible for establishing volunteering practices for Human Appeal in the US from scratch. This may include revising Human Appeal’s Volunteering Policy, Handbook and Induction, for an American audience and in-line with American volunteering standards for example

What We’re Looking For In Our Volunteers Officer

  • Ideally degree-educated in a related field, with minimum GCSE English and Maths
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience in charity / office administration / events or volunteers’ management
  • Experience working and/or volunteering in the US, with an understanding of the US voluntary sector, is highly desirable
  • Driver with a clean licence and full-time access to a car, as regular travel across the North and Scotland area will be required
  • Flexible attitude, as the Volunteers Officer will be expected to support campaigns by attending activities and events that may take place in unsociable hours, such as evenings and weekends. Please note that any over-time will be compensated via Human Appeal’s TOIL Policy
  • Computer literate and database proficient; experience using Salesforce is desirable
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about the international development sector
