Windle International empowers refugees & people affected by conflict & marginalisation to achieve their educational potential and contribute to sustainable development. We are seeking a proactive communicator to support us.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for a proactive and positive communications volunteer to assist us in our communications activity. Reporting to the Comms and Advocacy Officer, we are looking for someone with some experience of creating content for newsletters, websites, and social media and who can write engagingly and creatively. This opportunity will suit someone with some previous communications/marketing experience (personally or professionally) looking to move into the humanitarian sector, with a good instinct for what makes an interesting news story, creative flair and natural storytelling ability.

Primary Duties Will Include

  • planning and scheduling key comms opportunities, milestones and content
  • sourcing positive stories from teams in East Africa the UK
  • creating engaging blog posts, web news stories, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn posts
  • creating regular newsletters using Mailchimp.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with

  • Excellent written English
  • Interest in international development and humanitarian work, particularly education
  • Some understanding of the issues facing refugees, conflict affected communities and those who have been marginalised in East Africa is desirable but not essential
  • Ability to commit to 4-6 hours per week
  • Access to your own laptop and internet connection

This is a long-term project and we are seeking interest from people wanting to commit longer term to a volunteering role; a minimum of 3 months. Work will be from home with regular catch-ups and supervision with the Communications & Advocacy Officer, via online meeting.

This is a voluntary position and is therefore not remunerated but we can cover any reasonable expenses incurred (agreed in advance). In future there is a possibility that the scope of this opportunity will broaden, with the potential of travel.

What difference will you make?

Education is a basic human right. It fosters human development, and provides not only knowledge but hope that a brighter future is possible. For communities affected by conflict, this is particularly important. For children and young people who are refugees and from the communities that host them, education is a means of protection against forced recruitment into armed groups, child labour, sexual exploitation and child marriage. It strengthens community resilience, and empowers communities affected by conflict by giving them the knowledge and skills to live productive, fulfilling and independent lives. However, the reality is that for many, the education they receive is woefully inadequate.

As a volunteer at Windle International’s secretariat, based in the UK, you will be helping us to ensure that the charity is financially sustainable, able to grow and continue to help children and youth affected by conflict and marginalisation. You will be part of a team of very passionate, dedicated professionals, who are based around the world. Your skills and experience will add immense value to the lives of millions of children and youth in eastern Africa.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

This opportunity will suit someone with some previous communications/marketing experience (personally or professionally) looking to move into the humanitarian sector. In return, you will get

  • An opportunity to develop your professional communications skills
  • Experience in an international NGO
  • Playing an important role in increasing support for us to help refugees and people affected by conflict to access education
