RefuSHE protects, nurtures, educates, and empowers young refugee women and girls in East Africa through a unique holistic model that provides shelter, education, case management, counseling, childcare, legal advocacy, and vocational training. RefuSHE’s holistic program meets the imminent needs of unaccompanied, separated, and orphaned refugee girls, young women, and their children.
Founded in 2008, RefuSHE is a U.S. nonprofit with headquarters in Chicago and operations in Nairobi, Kenya. It is the first and only organization dedicated to refugee girls in East Africa. Over the past fourteen years, RefuSHE has grown to become a leading institution and global thought-leader in the field of refugee protection.
Position Title: Vocational Training Instructor – Tailoring (Grade 2)
Department: Girls Empowerment Program (GEP)
Supervisor: Associate Director – GEP
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Design, develop and deliver a tailoring Grade 2 training curriculum, approved by RefuSHE and NITA, to vocational trainees.
- Design and implement a tie and dye curriculum to prepare artisans for joining RefuSHE’s social enterprise.
- Lead classroom activities by providing individualized support to participants and maintaining a high-level learning environment.
- Compile weekly and monthly reports on each participant enrolled, addressing their work progress and participation.
- Strive to develop a good rapport with individual participants and ensure that they have access to one-on-one communication when needed;
- Regularly communicate additional educational needs that the participants may have that need to be addressed to the Associate Director – GEP.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding each participant served in any and all RefuSHE programs.
- Effectively and respectfully handle issues of discipline and behavior in the classroom while referring participants to your supervisor if follow up on any sensitive issue is required.
- Support participants in apprenticeship placements for practicum and on the job learning.
- Organize learning fairs in campus and out of campus to equip learners with the current market trends.
- Facilitate pre-production training for participants in preparation for recruitment to RefuSHE’s social enterprise.
- Initiate and facilitate mentorship sessions for participants in the textile and fashion industry.
- Perform any other lawful duties that may be assigned to you by your supervisor.
Competencies:
- Diploma in Technical Education from Kenya Technical Trainers College.
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Clothing Technology or Fashion and Design examined by Kenya National Examinations Council.
- 3-5 years of experience working in a similar position.
- Knowledge of effective training techniques and adult learning theory.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form in both English and Kiswahili.
- Ability to work with an ethnically and culturally diverse population.
