The Opportunity

This is an amazing opportunity for an experienced development leader to play a pivotal role in helping drive the overall philanthropic support and reach of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh as they continue to cultivate resources, connect people, and collaborate across the community to live and fulfill Jewish values. With record-breaking support in place, the Vice President for Development will be joining the Federation at an exciting moment in their ongoing journey to achieve their vision of a flourishing Jewish community where everyone feels included, supported, and inspired.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the inaugural Vice President for Development will be responsible for growing all aspects of its diverse portfolio of funding streams and providing direction during a new era. With a new transformative strategic plan in place, the Vice President will be joining the Federation during an exciting time marked by an eagerness to embrace new approaches that strengthen fundraising and the Federation’s corresponding impact. Working in close partnership with the Chief Development Officer, the Vice President will support the design and execution of a comprehensive and diversified development plan which includes the community campaign, foundation, supplemental giving, corporate sponsorship, government funding, and missions. In doing so, the Vice President will develop and oversee a high-functioning, collaborative, and truly integrated team consisting of a group of diverse and talented professionals committed to measurable and meaningful impact. The Vice President will lead the integration of the financial resource development team, cultivating a culture of collaboration aimed at achieving the Federation’s ambitious goals.

As a key leader within the financial resource development team, the Vice President, with the support of a team of 18 talented development professionals, will assist the Federation in advancing its strategic priorities, thoughtfully engaging its stakeholders, and enhancing its overall fundraising efforts in order to achieve its mission and vision. The Vice President must bring a keen appreciation of the mission and vision of the Federation and the critical role it plays in the Jewish communities it serves in Pittsburgh and around the world, as well as embrace the Federation’s core values around diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Position Summary

Reporting into the Chief Development Officer, the Vice President of Development will be responsible for building and strengthening relationships with key stakeholders to advance their connection to and involvement in financial resource development and the Federation as a whole. Importantly, the Vice President of Development will play a central role in conceptualizing and building a new Center for Philanthropic Impact to attract and serve high net-worth families and help them reach their philanthropic goals. The Vice President of Development will also have a key fundraising portfolio of high potential donors for cultivation and solicitation.

The Vice President of Development will serve as champion for the work of Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, collaborating with leadership and development staff to set strategic direction and execute on fundraising efforts that further the organization’s mission and vision. In addition to personally building and managing a fundraising portfolio of key prospects and donors, the Vice President will play a key role in encouraging the professional growth of the development staff in order to maximize their fundraising activities. In keeping with the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh’s culture, the Vice President must be invested in and committed to the mission and vision of the organization.

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop and execute an innovative financial resource development strategic plan and vision within a fully integrated philanthropy model that promotes fundraising excellence in support of the Jewish Federation’s mission, vision, and all overarching organizational goals.
  • Build an annual operating plan aimed at achieving the long-term strategic plan and goals of the organization ensuring that key deliverables are met.
  • With the Jewish Federation’s senior management and volunteer leaders, help conceptualize and build a new Center for Philanthropic Impact – a major strategic plan objective focused on serving high net-worth families and Jewish Foundations.
  • Establish fundraising best practices around cultivating, stewarding, and soliciting prospective and current donors and volunteers for campaign, endowment, and all other relevant income streams.
  • Develop and track key performance metrics and measurements of success related to fundraising efforts and donor engagement. Build and lead a cohesive team of financial resource development professionals cultivating a culture of performance excellence, continuous feedback, and accountability for personal, professional, and organizational goals.
  • Liaise with planning and marketing to ensure that all fundraising messaging is not only compelling and consistent with the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh’s brand, but also customized to address specific donor interests.
  • Participate in the creation and implementation of internal and external financial resource development communications in collaboration with the Campaign Director, Foundation Director, and Marketing Director.
  • Oversee departmental budgets ensuring that resources are being allocated and deployed in the best interests of the Jewish Federation.
  • Provide leadership and thought partnership to the Community Campaign Director, Director of Development Operations, Assistant Vice Presidents of Development as well as additional senior level fundraising professionals.
  • Establish and develop relationships with key individual donors actively cultivating support and continued engagement leveraging prospect and donor tracking and moves management systems to stay current and report on fundraising opportunities.
  • Cultivate, steward, and solicit a portfolio of prospective and current donors for annual campaign, endowment, and all other relevant income streams.
  • Serve as a key member of the management team.
  • Carry out additional relevant responsibilities as required by the CDO or CEO.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will bring passion and dedication for the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh’s mission and vision along with at least 10 years of progressive development and leadership experience, including the management of front-line fundraising professionals involved in cause-related philanthropy.

  • Strong commitment to the mission and work of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh coupled with the ability to compellingly convey the mission, impact, and needs across the community.
  • A results-driven leader with exemplary organizational skills necessary to plan and implement strategic initiatives as well as inspire and motivate others.
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence, maturity, and sound judgement necessary for engaging with a broad set of constituents including donors, volunteers, board members, and staff.
  • High-level strategic and visionary leader with excellent communication skills.
  • A proven track record of cultivating and soliciting donors at the major gifts level ($25K+).
  • Lead a team of high-performing fundraisers providing professional development opportunities and coaching.
  • Strong cultural competency skills, and proven commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • An innovative problem-solver who can generate workable solutions as well as take initiative and integrate and lead teams.
  • Exceptional administrative and management skills related to staff management, partnership cultivation, budgetary oversight and data gathering/analysis, and stakeholder communications.
  • Ability to offer feedback, support, and infrastructure to achieve individual and organizational goals.
  • Flexible perspective and ability to work with processes and systems that are evolving and subject to change.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with all levels of staff, volunteers, donors, and prospective donors.
  • Strong knowledge of Jewish community, culture, and practices. Passion for the mission of the Jewish Federation and the Jewish community including Israel and world Jewry.
  • Unquestionable ethics, integrity, transparency, and accountability in all actions.

Education

Master’s Degree preferred or comparable graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., Social Work, Jewish communal service, Public Administration, business, non-profit management) or related field or equivalent professional experience required. CFRE certification is a plus.
