Purpose/objective of the position:

The Veterinary is responsible for providing specialized services to support refugees’ families travelling with pets to ensure they can continue their journey being sure their animal is in good health state. In addition, the veterinary is responsible for diagnosing and treating all animals accompanying families of refugees, not necessarily those who are sick or injured, also small sedation of the animals and information of travels procedures to other country. The veterinary will work in strict collaboration with the PSS worker in order to plan joint psychosocial activities for children and adults with their pets.

Generic Duties:

  • Treat sick or injured animals by prescribing medication, dressing wounds
  • Educate pet owners about how to take care of the pet during the displacement
  • Promote the health and wellness of animals by advising animal owners about sanitation measures, feeding and general care
  • Record actions by documenting and updating forms, reports, animal records and reporting diseases to public health officials when and if needed
  • Ensure compliance with veterinary procedures, ethics, policies and relevant statutes
  • Refer animals to clinic in case of need
  • Strictly liaise with PSS Workers in order to plan structured, when possible, or/and unstructured psychosocial activities with pet owners
  • Provide pet-facilitated psychosocial activities with PSS workers with vulnerable categories such as children, people with disabilities and others.
  • Regularly provide report to the Protection Manager, as requested,
  • Perform any other duty as requested by supervisor;
  • Carry out all tasks respecting key protection principles, including but not limited to: do no harm, non-discrimination, confidentiality and accountability and need-to-know principles.

Person Specification:

Education and professional experience:

  • University Degree in Veterinary Medicine;
  • Relevant work experience as a Veterinary;
  • Strong knowledge of psycho-social programming in the humanitarian context is preferable.

  • Ability to react quickly and make decisions under pressure about the wellbeing of an animal
  • Strong fondness and understanding of animals
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good analytical and reporting skills
  • Ability to show empathy to both pets and owners
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Working knowledge in English is preferable (written and spoken)
