Who you are:

Are you interested in honing your user research skills while learning about cutting-edge developments in technology to address illegal fishing? Do you have a passion for applying technology to do good in the world? If so, an internship on the Skylight team at AI2 may be the perfect opportunity. The Skylight team will be reviewing applications and scheduling interviews for Summer 2023 internships in January/February. Start dates will be determined based on your availability, will be 12 weeks in duration and will be based in East Africa, Indian Ocean island nations, Pacific Islands, or Southeast Asia.

Your next challenge:

We are looking for a highly motivated intern to directly contribute to the engagement strategy for Skylight, which is provided at no-cost to more than 40 countries and more than 100 government agencies around the world. Project details:

  • Work side-by-side with several government agencies, IGOs, and NGOs who are enforcing illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in their waters.
  • Propose and test various engagement strategies with these government agencies to see which have the highest impact on driving usage and impact.
  • Develop and test different types of training content and communication methods to evaluate which have the highest absorption among users. Particular focus on conveying machine learning concepts in the context of utilizing Skylight.
  • Gather feedback on new and developing features and functionalities, and explore new cases for the Skylight Product team.

Over the course of your time at AI2, you will build your resume and leave an impact on AI2 and the world.

What you’ll need:

  • Students late in their program (juniors, seniors, or masters students) with a strong academic record.
  • Experience working with and presenting to government agencies. Experience with any law enforcement agencies, national park services, or fisheries agencies is a bonus.
  • Successful past employment, internships or volunteer experience in a customer- or partner-facing role is a bonus.
  • Fluent in English and another language native to East Africa countries, island countries of the Indian Ocean, Pacific Island nations, or Southeast Asia nations.
  • A passion for ocean health and applying AI to address global challenges.

Essential Functions:

  • Strong communication skills to engage with agencies, IGOs and NGOs
  • Develop and test content and communication methods
  • Develop features and functionality via computer

Work Environment:

  • Primarily working at an office desk using a computer
  • Visiting “operations” facilities with many computers, air conditioned
  • Standard office environment
