The role

The Communications Directorate forms a key part of our new Social Purpose Group, reporting to the Chief Social Purpose Officer, which will lead our work on climate justice, racial justice and social justice. The Social Purpose Group brings communications together with our fundraising team, a new Social Purpose Lab that will ensure we maximise the impact we have in the world, and our new Storytelling Institute, a hub for campaigners and artists to collaborate in the service of social purpose goals.

Why choose us?

“Climate injustice. Disinformation. Structural racism. Regional and economic inequality. At home and abroad, society is beset with deep-rooted social, cultural, environmental and economic problems. We can help solve them, and in doing so create a better world.”

UAL Strategy 2022-2032

UAL is undergoing a period of transformation under the leadership of our Vice-Chancellor, James Purnell, who launched an ambitious 10-year strategy in March 2022. That strategy – The World Needs Creativity – committed us to becoming a Social Purpose university: giving our students the skills they need to thrive in a changing world; bringing a creative education to more students than ever before; and using our research and ideas to solve the world’s most pressing problems.

UAL – ranked second in the world among Art and Design universities – is formed of six colleges on sites across London. UAL has been a single organisation since 1988, but our world-leading colleges have always retained their own brand, identity and communications teams. Now is the moment for change: to deliver on our strategy we want to build a single, strategic communications directorate that will leverage the brands and capabilities of our constituent colleges but enable us to work together towards shared strategic goals.

Your profile

We believe the world needs creativity. That’s why UAL is a social purpose university, dedicated to nurturing creativity and deploying it to help solve the world’s problems. At the core of our new 10-year strategy is a commitment to making the world a better place through our collective creative endeavour, and our Communications Directorate will be key to that success.

This is a remarkable opportunity to build UAL’s first university-wide communications team, bringing together talented colleagues and remarkable stories from our six colleges, our three institutes and our extraordinary community of 5,000 staff and 22,000 students.

Over the next two years, we want to bring together colleagues from across the university to create a world-class communications team. We are looking for an experienced communications leader with a passion for the creative arts to help us make that journey.

We have extraordinary assets at our fingertips: academics at the cutting edge of creative practice; students producing challenging and inspiring work in every discipline from painting to interior design; fashion shows that draw celebrity guests; a film school with world-famous archives; beautiful new and historic buildings that form a backdrop to unforgettable events. But we don’t always leverage those assets to our full advantage. That means this role is a unique opportunity for a communications leader to shape a team that can have a transformational impact.

Part of the University’s new Social Purpose Group, the Communications Directorate will champion and develop our brand and reputation as the world’s foremost creative university and a leader in the social purpose movement. It will lead the development of our internal communications to drive connection and wellbeing withing the UAL family. It will champion our ground-breaking research, paving the way for the transformation of the creative industries. It will build connection with the diverse London communities in which our colleges are based. And it will harness our world-leading creative capacity to produce extraordinary content in the service of all these missions.

All we need now is an inspirational leader. Could it be you?
