Division of External Relations, Partnership and Coordination Service, NGO and Civil Society Section

 

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship within the NGO and Civil Society Section of the Partnership and Coordination Service under the Division of External Relations at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

 

Established in December 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. Organisational context

 

UNHCR¿s Partnership and Coordination Service (PCS) is responsible for ensuring UNHCR approaches partnerships in a strategic and coherent manner. The Services provides support at global level as well as to regional and country offices on relationships with UN agencies, NGOs, advocacy partners and others and ensure UNHCR exercises effective field leadership and coordination. Located in Geneva, PCS comprises of the Inter-Agency and Coordination Section (IACS), the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and Civil Society Section, and the Sports Section.

 

PCS¿ NGO and Civil Society Section leads the organization of quarterly Consultations with NGOs and ad-hoc meetings on specific issues and processes to facilitate NGOs inputs and contributions to UNHCR policies and processes. The Section also organizes Global Consultations with NGOs, and supports UNHCR Regional Bureaus in organizing Regional NGO Consultations.

 

PCS¿ NGO and Civil Society Section also engage in the development of new partnerships with NGOs and NGO consortia, but also other actors from the civil society such as refugee-led organizations (RLOs) and coalitions, faith-based organizations (FBOs) and arts organizations.

 

The position

 

The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Inter-Agency Coordination Officer (NGOs & Civil Society), NGO Section, Partnership and Coordination Service (Division of External Relations).

 

What the intern will learn

 

¿ Understanding of the UN systems and process;

 

¿ Overview of the NGO and civil society landscape and UNHCR¿s relationships with NGOs;

 

¿ Exposure to wide range of refugee issues;

 

¿ Internal processes and inter-divisional collaboration in a large humanitarian organisation;

 

¿ Inter-agency and cross-sectoral collaboration in a humanitarian context;

 

¿ Working in a multicultural and multilingual team.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

The Incumbent¿s Tasks Shall Include

 

¿ Undertake background research on NGOs and key developments in NGO policies;

 

¿ Prepare and update NGO factsheets, including and updating key funding data;

 

¿ Support the preparation of Consultations with NGOs and other thematic NGO meetings organized by the team;

 

¿ Assist in organizing bilateral meetings with NGOs, preparing briefing kits and note-taking;

 

¿ Assist team in supporting Regional Bureaus with guidance on NGO partnerships;

 

¿ Support updating and managing the set up of Salesforce database with data on engagement with partners;

 

¿ Assist team with information management (filing and archiving), in collaboration with the Record and Archive Service;

 

¿ Provide support with design and layout of presentations, reports, publications and visuals for social media and events;

 

¿ Support with updating content on the website, Intranet and Community of Practice;

 

Desirable Qualifications And Skills

 

¿ Provide any other support as required.

 

¿ Bachelor¿s or Master¿s degree in Political Science, International Affairs, International Development, Communications or any other relevant field;

 

¿ Interest in refugee and forcible displacement issues;

 

¿ Ability to work in English;

 

¿ Excellent written and oral communication skills;

 

¿ Strong organizational skills;

 

¿ Experience in organizing events or conferences, including online events;

 

¿ Research, data analysis, data visualization and information management skills;

 

¿ Very good knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point;

 

¿ Knowledge of InDesign or other graphics design software;

 

¿ Flexibility, teamwork skills, professional and personal integrity;

 

¿ Knowledge of French and/or any other UN languages;

 

¿ Experience in preparing communication materials;

 

¿ Experience in managing social media accounts, producing content and analyzing trends;

 

¿ Knowledge of Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Salesforce and online meeting hosting platforms (WebEx, Zoom, etc).

 

Minimum Qualifications Required

 

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

 

¿ Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within one year of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO ; and

 

¿ Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

 

NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

 

Conditions

 

It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Geneva, Switzerland; however, bearing in mind COVID-19 imposed restrictions, remote working arrangements might be possible, and working from home will in any case sometimes be required.

 

Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
