This position is located within the Fiscal Service, Accounting Section at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. The Accounting Technician performs work in support of budget, accounting, auditing, cash processing, employee travel, payroll, fiscal, and accounts receivable/payable.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Examines, verifies, and maintains accurate financial accounts and accounting data;
Summarizes transactions and prepares control documents or other posting documents;
Classifies, records, and reconciles transactions for accounting purposes;
Researches and verifies which appropriation and general ledger accounts an accounting transaction will affect;
Reviews and determines accuracy of all obligation documents before processing;
Makes timely adjustments to accounting errors found;
Ensures accurate posting of accounting activities in the financial management system;
Prepares monthly reports for Fiscal and Medical Center management;
Documents all financial transactions to ensure a proper audit trail;
Perform general clerical support of a fiscal nature;
Verifies cost data and availability of funds for transaction processing;
Ensures procurements are processed in accordance with financial and budgetary constraints and VA policies, procedures;
Enters data into financial network system to produce purchase orders for goods and services;
Responds to all customer inquiries regarding the status of accounting documents;
Works with higher graded staff to resolve various accounting issues;
Assists with the resolution of various financial problems such as delinquent obligations, outstanding travel, aging invoices, purchase order discrepancies;
Serves as fiscal assistant for a range of office requests including training, petty cash, travel, and general office supplies;
Examines vouchers, invoices, etc. for accuracy and adequacy of documentation and compliance with regulations;
Maintains files of contracts, reports, financial statements, etc.;
Performs other related work as assigned.

 

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have the following experience:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in Federal Service that has given you the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of an Accounting Technician GS-7. Specialized experience includes: performing clerical, assistant, and technician level work in support of budget administration, accounting, auditing, payroll, fiscal, and financial management functions; processing accounting transactions; balancing and reconciling financial statements; entering and tracking financial data within an automated accounting system; and preparing billing invoices, financial reports.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary with some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of computer reports, boxes, and ledgers.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
