Purposes

This role helps to foster self-reliance, care for the poor and the needy, and provide opportunities for giving and service by: helping members become economically and emotionally self-reliant; providing access to essential food and clothing items, helping members prepare for and respond to disasters; and providing humanitarian aid to relieve suffering; thus furthering the mission of the Church.

Operates straight trucks (vans) and hook trucks and moves pods, pod trailers, metal bins and compactors to transport donations to and from various locations in support of the overall welfare effort of Deseret Industries. Hauls dumpsters and compactor cans to the landfill or waste transfer station. Meets all requirements to obtain and maintain a CDL class A drivers license, including medical certification and drug screening. Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the equipment. Sits for extended periods of time in a moving vehicle and often gets into or out of a truck cab and/or a van box. Is physically active and moves, pushes, pulls, or lifts (up to 50 lbs alone and occasionally 100 lbs with assistance), climbs stairs, ramps, etc. to perform essential job duties. Responsible to train helpers when assigned.

Responsibilities

  • 80% – Safely operates combination vehicles [straight trucks (vans), hook trucks, pods, pod trailers, metal bins and compactors] for: local pick-up and delivery to other DI stores, residential pickups, collecting donations from Deseret Industries stake drives, wood and mattress deliveries, delivery to recyclers, and delivering waste to landfills or waste transfer stations. These activities generally occur within a 100 mile radius of the store. Performs safety inspections on truck equipment. Connects and disconnects hook trucks and pod trailers, and backs trailers into a dock for loading and unloading. Loads and unloads pods from/to hook trucks and pod trailers. Records information and keeps accurate records as required by D.O.T. and the Church.
  • 5% – Interacts with donors, other drivers and customers frequently. Must operate the vehicle in a professional and courteous manner. Provides exceptional customer service with donors, shoppers, and priesthood representatives. Provides quality customer service helping maintain a good working relationship with customers and assures a continual flow of donations necessary for the successful operation of Deseret Industries
  • 10% – Loads and unloads own vehicle by hand using a pallet jack, forklift, hand trucks, machinery dollies, etc. Secures loads on pods at drop sites prior to removal. Completes necessary paperwork to document pick-up or delivery. Maintains data on functions performed including time required, mileage driven, and cube of pod or van. Maintains a neat and orderly truck cab and dock area.
  • 5% – Performs interim minor preventative maintenance on the truck and trailer, performs minor mechanical repairs, performs facility maintenance and sanitation of equipment, and other miscellaneous duties.

Qualifications

  • Equipment operating proficiency, demonstrated by any of the following methods: 1) Six months verifiable professional trucking experience with class 8 combination vehicles, 2) Completes and passes an external truck driving course and demonstrates required proficiency and judgment, 3) Completes and passes a Welfare Services driver training program and demonstrates required proficiency and judgment
  • CDL class A license required to operate assigned vehicle; meets D.O.T. requirements and is able to obtain a D.O.T. medical card.
  • Stable work history and good driving record (must provide a current copy of DMV records)

Worthiness Qualification

Must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently temple worthy.
