Scruples Research is an innovative and green humanitarian social enterprise that operates in Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania. We conduct research, monitoring, evaluation, learning, and capacity-building activities for humanitarian actors, including the UN agencies, international or national non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, think tanks, and coordination bodies.
POSITION SUMMARY
This assignment-based role, the Translator, is expected to be a multilingual (Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Georgian, Romanian, Hungarian, Slovakian and English) and experienced to translate texts as well as conversations – if needed. The translator will be responsible for the accurate translation of the documents including the qualitative and/or quantitative data generated by the Field Researchers, such as key informant interviews, focus group discussions, field observations, story-telling activities, workshops and/or any other data generation method, depending on the specific project’s requirements. Most of the projects are undertaken on behalf of international and/or national humanitarian organizations working in Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania who are funded by local and/or international funds. The projects differ in nature and can include project/programme evaluations, scoping exercises, needs assessments, gender or protection analyses, project/program reviews, third party monitoring, research, and any other ad-hoc studies. The topics studied usually include protection, health, sexual and reproductive health, food security – livelihoods and agriculture, shelter, water – sanitation – hygiene.
This position involves the ability to think quickly and have a firm understanding of the field in which the translation will be done. The Translator is expected to translate information in a contextually accurate way.

Contract Length: 1 year with 2 months of probation (with possibility of extension)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Translate a variety of documents from one language to another, while maintaining the content, context, and tone of the original text.
- Proofread and edit translated materials to ensure accuracy, completeness, and fluency.
- Interpret for business meetings and events, conveying the message accurately and objectively, when requested.
- Conduct research on sector-specific terminology and translate technical documents as needed.
- Manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining high-quality work.
- Maintain confidentiality and protect the integrity of sensitive information.
- Ensure neutrality and accuracy when translating.
- Relay the style and tone of original language
- Proofread translated materials to ensure accuracy and consistency.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- At least bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field, such as translation, linguistics, language studies or an equivalent subject.
- Proven professional experience as a translator or interpreter
- Fluency in Russian, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Slovakian, Romanian and English
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Russian, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Slovakian, Romania and English
- Strong research skills to ensure accurate translations of technical or sector-specific materials
- Capability to perform tasks autonomously and handle multiple responsibilities concurrently
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Strong focus on precision and a dedication to delivering excellent work
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Knowledge in humanitarian response.
- Sound knowledge of translation software and tools
- Flexible and adaptable to work in the evenings and/or weekends if required.
- Supporting certification for certification and/or training on translation
FURTHER COMMENTS RELATING TO THIS POSITION
- Payment is monthly based on the rates.
- Evening and/or weekend work might be required.
Problem Solving
There are three levels of problem-solving: 1) What should be done and how to do it are clearly defined, and the incumbent will face identical or similar problems on a regular basis; 2) What should be done is known, but how to do it is not defined. The incumbent must use interpolative skills to pick and choose the right strategy to address a given problem; and 3) Why things are done is known, but what should be done and how to do it are not defined.
