War Child intends to scale its evidence-based interventions and methodologies in Ukraine through local partners, based on the demand, capacity to implement and relevance to the country’s context. With the role of a Trainer, War Child will embed training capacity into Ukrainian partners network where partners have the knowledge, resources, and skills to deliver training or services related to War Child products, i.e. Evidence-Based Methodologies (EBMs) in the areas of mental health and psycho-social support (MHPSS), child protection and education.
The main purpose of the role is to train EBMs in the country, while also provide ongoing support to partners throughout the implementation process. The Trainer takes active part in training program development by working closely with subject matter experts – War Child Regional Advisors(s) to design and develop training programs that align with War Child goals and objectives.
The impact of this role will be measured against an ability to successfully train and scale War Child EBMs in Ukraine, reaching out war-affected children, psychologists, teachers, care-givers, communities and national/local institutions. Training sessions will be delivered in offline and online mode, as applicable. Possible EBMs are: Be There, Reach Now, Ukraine Teacher Well-Being (adaptation of War Child’s CORE methodology), and TeamUp (all hyperlinked), among others. These products could be either stand-alone, or applied in packages, and they could be delivered directly by War Child or through local and international partnerships in the areas of MHPSS, child protection and education.
The incumbent serves on War Child’s Ukraine Response team and is based in Kyiv. Regular in-country travel is expected. The Trainer works closely with the team of Regional Technical Advisors and is supervised by the Country Representative.
Training delivery (70%)
The Trainer will be expected to:
Assess partner needs and determine existing skills/ knowledge gaps with capabilities;
Take active part in developing a training strategy that outlines the goals, methods, and resources needed to build training capacity within partners network. This includes development of a tailored implementation plan for each partner;
Contribute to contextualized and quality training content and materials development, including manuals, videos, presentations, and online resources. Make sure the content is clear, concise, and easy to understand;
Conduct Training of Trainers (ToT) programs by identifying relevant trainers within partners network, deliver ToT programs and support potential trainers with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver effective training;
Train partners by providing initial training to ensure partners have a strong foundation in the subject matter. This may include in-person workshops, webinars, or e-learning modules;
Customize and tailor the training to meet the needs of each partner, considering factors like location, customer/beneficiary base, and specific products or services;
Monitor the EBM implementation according to the implementation plan and specific requirements per activity and provide coaching and mentoring to the trained participants;
Oversee certification process validating the skills and knowledge of partners and motivating partners to invest in training;
Actively support the process of EBIs/EBMs scaling, in line with War Child’s country strategy and operational model.
Project Design, Implementation & Representation (20%)
Together with War Child Technical Advisors and project teams, the Trainer will:
Support War Child and partners in the design and development of funding proposals relevant to EBMs
Support project teams in the development of implementation plans, and delivery of relevant activities within new and existing projects
In coordination with, and guidance from War Child Technical Advisors, represent War Child in relevant forums and working groups
Contribute to other tasks, as requested and relevant to the role, including development of communications materials relevant to War Child programmes and EBMs.
Communities of practice (CoP) facilitation (10%)
Together with War Child Technical Advisor(s), the Trainer will:
- Support the facilitation of communities of practice (CoP) around EBMs with the ultimate goal of making these interventions and methodologies sustainable, while focusing on the needs of war-affected children, psychologists, care-givers and teachers;
- Coordinate the documenting and sharing of experiences of implementing EBMs, examples of best practice, and adoption of lessons learned across partners and stakeholders involved in training and implementation.
Key Result Areas
- Potential trainers and facilitators trained in EBMs to conduct workshops, training sessions and coaching with local professionals (such as teachers and psychologists), community stakeholders and caregivers;
- Customized and contextualized materials on specific EBMs developed;
- Partner networks established and sustained;
- Once sustainable communities of practice established, provide ongoing support for trainers and facilitators; and
- War Child’s programs on mainstreaming MHPSS into education and child protection are implemented in the country.
Experience, Knowledge & Skills
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of psychology, healthcare, sociology orteaching methodology;
- Sufficient knowledge and expertise in the MHPSS field;
- Training and certification in instructional design, training methodologies, or coaching (e.g. a Certified Professional Trainer (CPT) certification);
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Trainer must be able to convey information clearly and effectively, adapt his/her communication style to the audience, and facilitate discussions;
- Excellent presentation skills. Ability to deliver engaging and interactive presentations. Proficiency in public speaking and the use of presentation software and tools;
- Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to establish rapport with trainees, be approachable, provide constructive feedback, and work well with diverse groups;
- Proven adaptability and flexibility to the needs of different learners and audiences;
- Strong organizational skills with regards to coordinating schedules, materials, and resources;
- Proficiency in using various technologies, learning management systems, and software tools;
- Proven evaluation and assessment skills to assess training programs effectiveness and make improvements based on feedback and evaluation results;
- Demonstrated work experience as a trainer, teacher or educator. This can include both formal classroom teaching and practical experience in the subject matter;
- Cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity of an audience.

Local contract with salary and secondary labour conditions based on the in-country salary scale, local T&C’s will apply. Initially the contract will be via a consultancy agreement through December 31, 2024 with the possibility of extension.
The role is based on full-time working hours (40 hours per week).
This position is to be based in Kyiv, Ukraine. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Ukraine.
