What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation to ensure a concerted, rational, and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the position

The overall aim of the Cross-Media Unit is to deliver global campaigns and tell compelling stories to ICRC’s key audiences about our mission and the people we serve across all platforms and channels.

The Cross-Media Associate helps lead media enquiries and outreach and produces and distributes relevant Content. They also tackle various administrative tasks in coordination with the team assistant and participates in training as applicable.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

The Associate reports administratively to the AV producer, working transversally across all areas of expertise. They work with and receives feedback from relevant staff members in the following domains:

Creative Content (70%)

  • Supports with input and management of the Media Hub, including writing scripts, log lists, and captioning where required;
  • Manages camera and MOJO equipment inventory for the team and responds to ad-hoc requests for material;
  • Acts as a production assistant for the TV Studio Manager;
  • Edits short video pieces for social and traditional media, including subtitling in French;
  • Assists in filming interviews in Geneva;
  • Editing photos for media, web, and other projects.

Media and Channels (20%)

  • Supports in drafting communication products such as messaging documents, articles, and news releases;
  • Arranges media interviews, press conferences, and other related media events with the support of the assistant;
  • Helps triage and handle media requests, with oversight from media and channels lead;
  • Conducts day-to-day management of Cision, sending out media products, maintenance, and creation of CISION lists and databases;
  • Responsible for posting relevant material, including news releases, on ICRC.org using Drupal;
  • Conducts journalist research and identification to develop MuckRack lists of thematically-focused journalists;
  • Supports the development of thematic campaigns by preparing media material, planning, and developing digital promotion plans.

Administrative tasks (10%)

  • Supports assistant in answering and processing internal/external enquiries within given timelines;
  • Leads on writing the Monday Editorial Meeting minutes and coordinates Asana follow-up;
  • Provides other support to the assistant as vital, e.g. in managing translations.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Relevant undergraduate qualifications in journalism, communications, or similar;
  • Must have a maximum of one-year relevant work experience (on a paid contract) following your last degree or two years if previous traineeships are included;
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal;
  • Proficiency in English, French, and German is an asset;
  • Experience with Final Cut Pro X and /or Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator);
  • Proficient and enthusiastic about social media and a user of multiple platforms, either expertly or personally;
  • Interested in media relations;
  • Efficiently balances multiple projects and the ability to deliver under tight deadlines;
  • Ability to operate in a global environment and effectively navigate cross-cultural differences.
