What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Context

Within its global Economic Security (EcoSec) approach in conflict affected countries, the ICRC implements Relief, Livelihood, and Structural Support Programs to maintain, restore or improve food- and economic security at the household level. The ICRC’s EcoSec programs are multifaceted, and use in-kind assistance, cash, vouchers and services to assist conflict-affected people in a timely and flexible way to meet their essential needs and expenditures in a sustainable and dignified manner. The ICRC provides emergency food and essential items; supports nutrition programmes; delivers agricultural and veterinary or livestock activities; and supports income generation.
At ICRC headquarters, the EcoSec Unit defines guidance, policies, tools and templates to support operational teams throughout the result-based management cycle, including assessing needs, planning, designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating quality humanitarian responses.

Purpose

The EcoSec Associate will collaborate with Unit colleagues to i) support the development of technical guidance and training materials, ii) update and maintain internal knowledge management tools, iii) produce current state documentation of Ecosec’s data management tools and processes iv) produce statistical compilations, analysis and visualizations, v) contribute to internal and external written communication, and vi) participate in the unit’s discussions on strategic orientations and operational support.

S/he will receive technical guidance from the Economic Security Unit members, including the Deputy Head of Unit and specialists managing specific thematic files. S/he will have the opportunity to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge in emergency preparedness, relief, food security and livelihoods, with significant scope for engaging in new and innovative approaches.

Relationships and Reporting Line

The EcoSec Associate will report to the Deputy Head of Unit will supporting projects throughout the Unit in collaboration with thematic specialists and other team members.

General Duties

  • Understands and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement;
  • Understands and adheres to the ICRC Code of Conduct;
  • Understands the roles of the components of the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement;
  • Respects and observes staff regulations and security rules at all times;
  • Represents the ICRC in a professional manner at all times;
  • Develops and maintains a pleasant and conducive working environment with colleagues and line managers;
  • Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC;
  • May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when necessary;
  • When needed, represents EcoSec in an appropriate way during internal meetings, and avoids any activity that may reflect negatively on the ICRC’s image.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

Knowledge Management Tools

The post holder will support the EcoSec Unit in updating and maintaining digital environments that host EcoSec guidance, handbooks, reference documents, training materials, technical tools, glossary and lessons learned. This includes mapping of existing resources, contributing to the design and collaborating with the Learning & Development team on building the digital environment. The associate will also be involved in production and updates of content on the existing collaboration and communication platforms of the Unit.

EcoSec Learning and Development (LnD)

The post holder will contribute to digitalization, production, translation and proofreading of training materials and digital learning content related to EcoSec food security, livelihoods and specialist topics.

Process Documentation

The post holder will support documentation of current EcoSec data management tools and processes utilized during all phases of EcoSec’s program management lifecycle, in consultation with field and HQ stakeholders. This work will input into a larger exercise of developing a gap analysis and establishing EcoSec’s future digital and data strategy.

Communication

The post holder may be asked to contribute to the review and design of internal and external publications about the EcoSec Unit’s worldwide activities.

Support to thematic files

The post holder may support data collection exercises, reviews of existing work and translations of guidance on thematic files: income & markets, agriculture, livestock, nutrition, climate change, public health, protection, sexual violence, displacement and other emerging priorities within the Department of Protection and Essential services.

Certifications / Education required

University degree in public health, nutrition, information/data management, communication, social sciences, international relations or equivalent.

Professional Experience required

Maximum professional experience: 1 year (2 years if including 1 year traineeship).

Required profile and skills

  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work, international affairs and policy;
  • Proactive, autonomous and well- organized;
  • Data analysis literacy;
  • Ability to interact effectively with data users, managers and other stakeholders;
  • Strong organisational skills;
  • Good analytical and synthesis skills;
  • Fluent in all platforms of Microsoft Office;
  • Autonomy, flexibility, adaptability;
  • Some practical field experience is an asset;
  • Demonstrable interest in humanitarian action, the ICRC and other components of the Movement.

Language Requirements

Proficient in written and spoken English, knowledge of French and other official ICRC languages (Spanish, Russian, Arabic) is a strong asset.
