Particularly committed to the fight against diseases linked to unsafe water, the leading cause of death in the world, SI’s interventions provide expertise in the field of access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, but also in the essential area of food security and livelihoods. Present in some twenty countries, the SI teams – 2500 people in total, made up of expatriates, national staff, permanent staff at HQ, and a few volunteers – intervene with professionalism and commitment while respecting cultural norms.

About the mission

SI has been working in Syria since 2012, and is today operating in North East Syria (NES) and North West Syria (NWS)

The NES programs provide an integrated assistance in the WASH, NFI, Shelter, FSL sectors to displaced populations and host communities affected by the conflict.

The NWS programs provide WASH and NFI/Winterization support to affected populations.

In NES and NWS, the lifesaving activities are:

  • Wash – emergency package in IDPs settlements,
  • Distribution of NFIs and cash for vulnerable populations.

And in NES, SI is implementing more sustainable activities:

Individuals’ houses rehabilitations

General objective:

Context: Over the years SI Syria mission has been working towards capacity building for all SI employees. While some progress has been made the mission has identified a major challenge that managers, who are responsible to build the capacity of their teams, are often missing the necessary skills/mindset. The proposed people management training is intended to develop their skills to support, train, motivate and manage their teams. SI Managers are confronted with an increasing complex external environment and hold a critical responsibility towards the organization as well as the teams under their management. Managers are required to be adaptable and cope with the challenge of working in and across different cultures. Those who hold leadership positions within the organization are expected to actively listen, accept feedback, and demonstrate openness, empathy, and integrity. Due to the growing complexity of the mission managers are required to delegate more of their responsibilities and focus on the bigger picture. The objectives of the requested training to address these challenges will be to:

  • Build & develop situational leadership, through self-assessment and reflection.
  • Understand meaningful and effective delegation.
  • Refine analysis & decision making.
  • Enhance managers ability to build and manage the performance of their team.
  • Improve communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution.

Methodology:

Design and facilitate an on-site, face to face training that can be complemented with self-led learning modules or follow up distance training at a later day. The expected training duration is 5 days/Base, but SI is open to exploring different training methodologies to ensure the practical application of management concepts.

Pre-test assessment of all potential participants to identify strengths and weaknesses (2-3 weeks before proposed training). Modules can be refined according to the needs identified but should center around the main concepts/topics below.

Proposed Modules:

  1. Our context/challenges/capacity & theory and practical application of situational leadership
  2. How to delegate responsibility (what to delegate, how, and to whom)
  3. Analysis & Decision Making
  4. Capacity Building/skills development and performance management of a team
  5. Communication/Collaboration/Conflict Resolution

All modules must involve role play, case studies, and group exercises.

Post-assessment of all participants and provision of training certificate
