Job Title: The Research and Programs Associate.

The Africa Hub (a consortium of organizations lead by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)), is updating its programming in the Horn of Africa, to make it consistent with anticipated and recent political and economic developments in the region. We are therefore searching for individuals who will help us better prepare for these regional trends by providing research and programming support to our existing activities. The successful individual will be based in American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The post holder will work closely with subnational and national organizations, in-country as well as with regional entities. The role provides all-round insight into Africa Hub operations and requires research and analysis skills (focusing on regional political-economy trends), program management including monitoring, evaluation and learning, and policy backgrounds.

Description of Responsibilities:

• Oversee or conceptualize and conduct research, write analyses, briefs, and reports, and make presentations on Horn of Africa geopolitical dynamics before internal and external audiences.

• Continuously monitor and analyze trends and dynamics in the Horn of Africa region.

• As necessary, provide on-sport insight into emerging trends in the region, and or alert Consortium partners to significant impending issues.

• Participate in country or regional risk analyses and contingency planning when called upon

• Represent The Africa Hub in meetings, conferences, and symposium whenever called upon and as necessary.

• Lead in providing programme management support to The Africa Hub and Consortium partners, from planning to execution of strategies and activities, to monitoring, evaluation, and learning.

• Design cutting edge research and analysis curricular as well as resource guides for strengthening engagement with civil society organizations in the Horn of Africa.

• Grow networks and manage partnerships at national, sub regional, and international partners, including with multilateral organization and funding agencies.

• Contribute to The Africa Hub communication by synthesizing large volumes of data and technical analytical reports, translating them into products for the consumption of diverse audiences.

• Coordinate Consortium partner activities at subnational, national levels, and regional levels.

Requirements

• A postgraduate qualification in conflict studies, political economy, or related social science fields.

• At least five years’ experience in conflict research, peacebuilding, and policy analysis. This should include knowledge of or experience using open-source information monitoring, research, and analysis tools.

• Ability and penchant for exceptional and analytical thinking, and to synthesize large volumes of information on a short notice.

• Knowledge of contemporary policy dynamics and political developments in the Horn of Africa, and the peace and security institutional terrain in the region.

• Experience in programme planning, management and execution, and ability to monitor and report progress and learning.

• Prior experience working in a regional or international multilateral agency.
