INTRODUCTION

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is anchored on a fundamental vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. This vision has been the driving force in all of HFHI’s actions and activities that have seen more than 29 million people around the world supported to build or improve the place they call home.

To further fulfil this vision, HFHI established the Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter (The Terwilliger Centre) to Build and Expand Inclusive Housing Markets by supporting local firms to innovate and expand client-responsive services and products. The Terwilliger Centre understands that the role of local markets is critical in closing adequate housing gaps among the low-income and incremental market segment.

Among The Terwilliger Centre’s efforts over the past five years in Kenya include engaging stakeholders in the affordable housing market system to facilitate efforts to drive housing quality up and housing costs down, while taking cognisance of contextual realities in the country. The aim is to stimulate inclusive housing markets while generating expanded benefits to low-income households in a sustainable manner. The thrust of interventions is the market system development approach that focuses on systemic change aimed at stimulating the low-cost housing market system to innovate and replicate promising practices on a sustainable basis.

BACKGROUND

The housing challenge for low-income families is exacerbated by limited capacity and information to navigate the complex housing environment – a challenge evidenced in all our programming work in Kenya. Low-income families largely rely on unskilled labours aka fundis for their entire construction or house improvement process since professional services are unaffordable. This option of relying on fundis for information and advice comes with various challenges for households, including not being in control of the end results due to information gaps, difficulties in sourcing and choosing appropriate materials/construction technologies, cash flow, ballooning costs and general challenges in managing fundis. The list is endless!

To help address this challenge, The Terwilliger Centre through the Housing Behaviour Change programme is working with partners on multiple strategies to address knowledge, uptake and use of available and emerging housing solutions and products to help bring down the cost of housing. This includes developing media interventions and human centred design approaches, that support firms in innovating and adapting their service and product offerings to incremental builders.

The Terwilliger Centre is currently working with a leading media house to create and pilot an edutainment programme that focuses on affordable housing solutions. The aim is to influence behaviour around attitude, skills and practices of multiple actors in the housing ecosystem resulting in, increased availability, access, and use of quality affordable housing products and services. The intention of the partnership is to strengthen the market function around information sharing through a robust innovative, scalable and replicable approach.

In implementing the intervention with the media house; various gaps continue to emerge that if not addresses will impede the desired sector transformation. These include,

  1. Limited use of and challenges generating data that actively speaks to and provides evidence of developmental results,

  2. Bridging the gap between media company’s revenue-based objectives and developmental objectives,

  3. Willingness of media to invest and create dialogue platforms for developmental content

The Terwilliger Centre seeks to conduct a learning session with its media partner, to discuss and deliberate on closing these gaps while underlining the role of media as a crucial change-agent in the affordable housing discourse in the region.

OBJECTIVE OF THE LEARNING SESSION

  1. To enhance the media partners’ understanding of the affordable housing sector,

  2. To deepen the media’s understanding, willingness and value proposition to create and disseminate content on affordable housing solutions,

  3. To trigger conversation and interest on developing a system that monitor results beyond immediate listenership and reach of a programme,

  4. To explore emerging opportunities and develop actionable points for further media engagement

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The scope of work includes:

  1. In consultation with HFHI, lead preparation of materials and presentations based on the objectives provided above,

  2. Moderate the learning session in a participatory and outcome-oriented way eliciting utmost engagement of participants,

  3. Provide technical advice for interactive discussion sessions,

  4. Synthesize key discussions relevant to the objectives, and guide participants towards key actionable ideas,

  5. Provide a report of the learning session outcomes capturing relevant inputs and key action points

DELIVERABLES

  1. A well moderated learning session that will elicit participation, meet the objectives, and generate follow up action points

  2. A process and synthesis report within two weeks after the learning session

KEY COMPETENCIES

The facilitator should have expertise facilitating media workshops with an understanding of how media interventions can be harnessed to promote sustainable content development.

Other requirements include.

  1. At least a bachelor’s degree in Communication for Development, Media Relations or Journalism from a recognized institution,

  2. At least five years’ experience working with media with evidenced proof of media capacity building,

  3. Ability to facilitate/moderate workshops and or training (share 3 examples of previous work),

  4. Demonstrable experience working with a wide range of stakeholders in public and private sector,

  5. Proven analytical, interpersonal and communication skills,

  6. An understanding of Market Systems approaches and experience working with housing programmes is an added advantage
