Fairtrade Africa

ABOUT US

Established in 2005, Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is a member of Fairtrade International and the umbrella network organization representing Fairtrade-certified Producer Organizations in Africa and the Middle East. It has four (4) regional networks – Eastern & Central Africa; Southern Africa; West Africa; and the Middle East & North Africa. FTA currently represents 1,354,294 farmers and workers in 660 producer organizations spread across 28 countries in Africa and the Middle East by providing services that contribute to the improvement of their livelihoods.

PROJECT ASSIGNMENT AND BACKGROUND

From 2017-2019, Fairtrade worked with three Ugandan coffee producer organizations to test ways to leverage Fairtrade coffee production to combat these environmental and health issues faced by Ugandan farmers in Bukomansimbi, Bushenyi, Ibanda Mbarara, Mitooma, Ntungamo and Sheema districts. Together they successfully tested the sale and distribution of 4,000 improved cookstoves to farmers that burn fuel more efficiently with less smoke, reducing demand for fuel wood and limiting Indoor-Air-Pollution in households. The stoves’ ability to measurably reduce carbon dioxide emissions due to their higher efficiency made them eligible to provide carbon credits at a rate of 1.2 credits per year per stove for these cooperatives and the project was registered with the Gold Standard.

The new grant funding from the Co-op Foundation (Carbon Credit Innovation Fund (CCIF) is targeting to implement the large-scale distribution of efficient, clean cookstoves fueled by scaled production of briquettes made from discarded coffee husk waste – produced by trained cooperative members. This approach would build on existing work and commercialize the model so that the project would not be reliant on grant funding to be sustainable in the long term and serve as a model to the sector to unlock new partnerships interested in replicating the approach in their own coffee supply chains.

The project, therefore, seeks the services of a consultant to support in training and monitoring of beneficiary household cookstove utilization, performance, documentation of household data, and preparing reports accordingly.
