Fairtrade Africa

1.0 Background

Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is the umbrella network organization representing Fairtrade-certified Producer Organizations in Africa and the Middle East. It has four (4) regional networks – Eastern & Central Africa; Southern Africa; West Africa; and the Middle East & North Africa. Established in 2005, FTA is a member of Fairtrade International and currently represents 1,354,294 farmers and workers in 660 producer organizations spread across 28 countries in Africa and the Middle East by providing services to them that contribute to the improvement of their livelihoods.

2.0 Aim and Objectives

FTA would like to engage the services of a consultancy firm or individuals to carry out the review or assessment of employment contracts term limits and provide advisory services in line with the applicable labour laws or any other legal requirements in key countries of operations including Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, South Africa, Eswatini, Malawi, Mauritius, Madagascar,

The firm(s) or individual(s) will be responsible to carry out the following tasks:

  • Conduct the review and assessment of the applicable labour laws as relates to the employment contract terms limits in 12 countries.
  • Assess the implications of employment contract term limits as it applies to employment contract termination provisions and alignment to the specific countries’ labour laws or any other legal requirement.

3.0 Deliverables

  • Inception report that clearly defines the work plan and methodology employed for the assignment.
  • Assessment report on employment contract term limits and implications in alignment with countries’ specific labour laws or related legal requirements.

A report on recommendations or specific actions that FTA should institute to ensure compliance with the applicable labour laws or any other legal requirements in each of the select countries.

  1. Skills & Requirements

The desired knowledge, skill, and/or ability required include

  • Strong understanding of labour laws or related employment regulations in each of the countries.
  • Demonstrated experience working on matters about labour laws in each of the selected countries.
  • Experience with public/civil services and non-governmental sector administrative structures and systems in developing countries, particularly sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Demonstrated experience in the field of policy review, drafting and implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing legal instruments on matters relating to employment and contract management.
  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to write clearly, concisely and with strong verbal communication and presentation skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and working in multicultural contexts

  • Section 2: Proposed Professional fee range based on the role outlined in section 2.0 Aim and Objectives above;
  • Section 3: Any additional information the firm or individual believes demonstrates added value for Fairtrade Africa within the scope of this assignment;
  • Section 4: Two references (name and contact) from organizations with whom similar assignments have been undertaken outlining the firm or individual role.
