About MAG:

MAG saves lives and builds futures by working with others to reclaim land contaminated with the debris of conflict, to reduce the daily risk of death or injury for civilians, and to create safe and secure conditions for development. MAG shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for our work to ban landmines. Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict.

About the Guinea Bissau programme:

In early 2022, MAG has established a start-up project in Guinea Bissau. The project seeks to strengthen the organisational and operational capacities of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and national security and defence sector institutions in Weapons and Ammunition management. The country declared completion of their mine clearance obligation under Article 5 of the Convention in 2012. However, mined areas were discovered following recent accidents. This project will also see MAG work to improve Guinea Bissau’s ability to deliver an expanded and high-quality humanitarian mine action programme to address the legacy contamination, and in turn make affected regions safer for vulnerable communities and internally displaced people. In supporting Guinea Bissau, MAG will be collaborating closely with ECOWAS Commission.

About the role:

Our Technical Field Managers are the core of our work. The aim of the post will be to implement all aspects of Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA), Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operations and related tasks in accordance with standard operating procedures and as directed by the Technical Operations Manager (TOM).

The post holder will provide training, evaluation and daily monitoring of all technical operations staff to ensure safe practices and build local capacity for humanitarian mine action. You will also provide coordination and technical oversight of WAM projects from initial project design, rehabilitation and/or construction of new facilities to the development of sustainable national capacity. In addition, you will support the TOM in ensuring overall safe execution of all MAG technical activities within the country.

About you:

The successful candidate must have technical knowledge of mines/SALW/unexploded ordnance and mine clearance techniques, including new developments. You must be EOD 3+ IMAS qualified and have experience of working in mine clearance/EOD3+/SALW operations in developing countries that are contaminated by remnants of conflict, and of managing field operations. You will be experienced in leading, motivating and managing a diverse team of people, and in mentoring and coaching others. You will also have experience of conducting formal or informal training and the transfer of appropriate skills to others. Experience of working independently for extended periods of time in ‘stand-alone’ environments with minimal supervision is also required.

Fluent written and spoken Portuguese language skills are essential. Fluency in English or French language is also required.

Please note that as part of MAG’s commitment to safeguarding, this post is subject to background checks before an offer of employment is confirmed.

MAG is committed to the principles of diversity, equality and inclusion. If you think you would be suited to one of our roles we would welcome your application regardless of age, disability status, ethnicity, gender, religion or sexual orientation. We strive to provide an inclusive and supportive working environment where all employees feel respected and supported in fulfilling their potential.
