Amref Health Africa was founded in 1957 and has since grown to become the largest African-based international health development organisation. Currently, Amref implements more than 120 programmes across 35 countries and directly reaching more than 12 million people annually. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, Amref Health Africa has offices in nine African countries namely – Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Senegal, South Sudan, and Zambia. Additionally, there are eleven advocacy and fundraising offices across Europe and North America.

With the bold vision of catalysing “Lasting health change in Africa”, the organisation prioritises transformation aimed at bridging the gap between communities’ needs and the rest of the health system. The organisation’s mission is to increase sustainable health services through innovative solutions in training, quality service delivery, and health financing. To catalyse desired change, Amref deploys a series of process-based and cross cutting drivers namely advocacy and policy, research, innovation, youth, diversity and inclusion.

To deepen, expand, and accelerate its impact, Amref is seeking part time Technical Experts to work with its thematic technical teams (organised as communities of practice). Through this engagement, it is expected that Amref will achieve technical excellence, growth, and deeper impact across Africa.

Scope of Work and Deliverables

The Technical Expert will provide support covering the following scope;

  • Lead the collation and analysis of project reports related to Health Financing at Amref Health Africa and develop position papers, policy papers etc. that showcase the influence that these projects can have on future business development opportunities
  • Provide summary briefs that contain emerging research in health financing practice that will support capacity building for the institution
  • Support the Health Financing Community of Practice to strengthen the health financing pillar for Amref Health Africa
  • Identify emerging opportunities to showcase Amref’s work/plug into the health financing regional and global discourse
  • Work with the members of the health financing community of practice and the communications team to increase visibility of Amref as a Thought Leader in Health Financing both internally and externally.
  • Review the health financing pillar at Amref Health Africa (and related documents) to create a draft strategy that will accelerate progress in this pillar
  • Support Amref country offices in the adoption and contextualization of the Health Financing pillar
  • Support the Amref country offices in developing metrics and indicators for measuring the performance of the HF pillar

The Person

  • Recognised expert in health financing with the ability to engage effectively and shape dialogue and policy influence in global, regional, and national fora.
  • Demonstrable ability in Health Financing research and policy design at national and regional levels.
  • Excellent understanding of health financing and health financing policy at a regional and global level
  • Master’s degree in Health Economics (PhD Preferred) or relevant background. The candidate should have demonstrable experience working across health system programming within the African region
