Technical Accountant

HCV Underwriting Managers

The purpose of this position is to direct, manage, plan and coordinate organisation-wide financial management activities and policies to accomplish the goals and vision of HCV and associated companies.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Completed BCom degree or equivalent
  • 3-5 years proven management experience
  • At least 3-5 years’ experience in accounting within the insurance industry
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Fundamental understanding of finance principles, legal and accounting best practice and operating procedures

Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day management of subordinates
  • Coordinate, distribute and follow up on workload of subordinates
  • Ensure that management accounts and other financial reports are prepared timeously and accurately for U/W and Pty
  • Present the financial status quarterly to the board of directors
  • Prepare/review the annual budgets for U/W and Pty and ensure they are captured
  • Ensure that expenditure is aligned to budget and variances explained
  • Enforce financial controls in order to maintain ethical standards and good corporate governance
  • Manage subordinates to ensure workflows are completed and submitted timeously: Creditor payments, VAT, PAYE, Broker commissions, Bonus refunds, Sasria, Income Tax, Reinsurance renewals, Advance premium runs, monthly debit order runs, month end processing
  • Ensure that the financial accounting systems are maintained effectively
  • Manage cash flow
  • Manage that the financial accounting systems are maintained effectively
  • Manage the Debtors and Creditors for U/W and Pty
  • Manage all financial queries from all stakeholders
  • Manage all Financial related strategies
  • Review and revise departmental SOP’s if and when required
  • Analysis of financial data to find trends 
  • Manage KPI’s and look for potential problems
  • Regular feedback on financial performance to Management 
  • Mentoring & training financial staff
  • Keep on top of financial database requirements
  • Review the financial reports of the associated companies and their profitability within the group of companies
  • View financial controls and procedures and ensure they are maintained through all entities
  • Maximise investment income
  • Identify underperforming areas / companies and make recommendations for improvement
