The Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Centre is an independent expert group that provides rapid and in-depth advice on the laws of war to ensure the protection of people in conflict zones worldwide.

As a centre of excellence, we share knowledge about and promote international law relevant for situations of armed conflict through research, advocacy, and training. Our rapid and in-depth analyses enable the humanitarian sector to respond to urgent needs and improve international law and its application.

The Centre is part of the Swedish development organisation Diakonia and has regional teams based in Bamako, Beirut, and Jerusalem, which cover conflicts in the Middle East, West Africa, and emerging crises worldwide.

Main responsibilities

  • Oversee and lead the implementation of the work of the Syria Regional Desk, including ensuring high quality of legal analysis, financial management, and ensuring monitoring and evaluation of all projects.
  • Provide dynamic, motivational and caring leadership to your colleagues.
  • Coordinate with key leadership roles across the Centre, and Diakonia (Country and Regional Directors) as well as with key support departments.
  • Ensure the implementation of the Desk’ Action Plan related to operationalising the Centre’s commitment to work based on feminist principles.
  • Lead regional and national fundraising initiatives to support the movement towards greater donor diversification.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Centre and strengthening partnerships with local, regional and international actors.
  • Support Diakonia strategic processes.

Qualifications and experience

  • Master’s degree in law, human rights, conflict studies, international relations or relevant topic.
  • International law expertise and prior working experience of a minimum of ten years in the human rights field, including international humanitarian law and advocacy. Ideally a significant number of years working in the MENA region.
  • Documented experiences of leading a team towards achieving results and impact, based on certain principles and values that correspond to institutional commitment, including the commitment to work based on feminist principles.
  • Demonstrated excellence within the sector, including publications and high-level panel engagements.
  • Experience and excellent knowledge of donor relations, and frameworks for humanitarian and development programming.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership.
  • Fluency in English, additional languages are an asset (in particular Arabic).

Conditions and application

Location: Flexible (Beirut/Stockholm/Possible Europe Wide Mobility).

Duration: 2 years with the possibility of extension.
